An error occurred while creating the factory recovery data - how can I find out what the error is?
I have a new Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series laptop. Trying to create a Factory Backup on an external hard drive. I've tried attaching the USB at various points in the process, and in various USB ports, but always end up with the same error message "An error occurred while creating the factory recovery data".
I tried to "update" but when I select UPDATE the only option is to UPGRADE to premium, I can't find a way to UPDATE.

Here is the end of the story: I had two phone sessions with Dell Technical Support, and their solution was to send me a flash drive with the backup and recovery files. The next day I got an alert from Dell that a new download for Backup and Recovery (version 1.9) is available for Dell computers which had upgraded to Windows 10 (which I had done as soon as I got my new laptop). I had a chance to download the file and execute it today, and it works.
Thank you for your suggestion. It seems my problem occurred just a little ahead of the Dell solution.

Hi Wearyuser,
I believe you need a flash drive or DVD discs to create a backup image. I don't believe it will work with an external hard drive. I'm not exactly sure of the size required, but I think a 16GB or 32GB flash drive should be big enough. I seem to recall the utility indicates how much room is needed.
Please refer to this article for more details.

Osprey4, thank you for your response. The article is about Windows 8; I am using Windows 10. I don't know if that makes a difference. The Dell Backup and Recovery program seems to have changed since the article was written. Now, the program's first step is Factory Recovery Media The screen lists the options: External USB Hard Drive - Best Option; USB Flash Drive - Better Option; Recordable Disc - Good Option. I bought a new packet of flash drives today and tried again with the Better option. The Initialization step of Creating the Media does not complete; the error message is "An error occurred." (Similar to the error message when I try the External USB Hard Drive, which is "An error occurred while creating the factory recovery data.")
I just downloaded and installed Dell System Detect, and also (from the Dell support site) System Checkup by IOLO. Ran both checks and applied the recommended fixes. The problem with Factory Recovery Media remains.

Have you checked downloads for an updated version of the application? If you see none, call Dell tech support and ask for help.
