Recoverpoint Support of Dell Storages and if used for VMWARE

Hello

I have some questions

1) Does RP support the following storages  : Dell Equallogic PS6100 Dell Equallogic PS4100 ?

2) Support matrix if supported

3) Can I use Recoverpoint to Replicate ESXi Luns and import in DR site with no issues when used on DR when mounted to ESXi's in DR?

4) is SRM a must in case I want to replicate ESXi hosts and vms data ?

5) if we have 2 appliences , I can use each for a site without HA  ( One Applience only at each site ) , right?

Thanks

#3 - No problems

#4 - Not a must; just a recommendation

#5 - In order for you to configure an RP cluster you need to have at least two RPAs at each site. RecoverPoint will run on one RPA is one fails but for the initial config you must have two RPAs

I couldn't find any info on Dell storage arrays. What type of splitter were you plannig on using?

Hi Sami,

Answers below:

1. Please check the ESM.

2. Not sure what the question is here?

3. This question needs clarifying. Are you asking if you can have the target LUNs in a mounted stated?

4. No. SRM is what it is, an automated site recovery capability. RecoverPoint performs the replication and SRM controls RecoverPoint CG(s) by automating the presentation of the DR VMs in it's PG(s).

5. This is not supported as you require a minimum of 2 RPAs per site.

Regards,

Richard

As forsht said, check the EMC Support Matrix to see if a specific array is supported.

As far as the remaining questions:

#3 - Yes. You can use RecoverPoint to failover datastores from one site to the other. I think that was the answer you were looking for. Once you enable image access RecoverPoint will let you see the datastore(s) on the DR hosts.

#4 - See forshr's reply. I would just add that SRM simplified failover. It does everything for you and with two clicks you can failover or perform a test. You don't have to perform manual rescans on the DR hosts, browse the datastores and import the VMs. SRM will do all of that for you as well as some other things like re-IPing the VMs, booting VMs in a certain order, etc.

#5 - See forshr's reply

To add further clarity:

#3. The splitter manages read/write access to the volumes. This read/write capability is enabled once you invoke image access.

#4. SRM has two modes. Test Run Recovery Mode and Run Recovery Mode. Test Run Recovery Mode will invoke physical logged access mode and let you test the integrity of the data on your VMs without actual failover. Run Recovery Mode will invoke physical logged access mode followed by direct access mode and invoke failover. So a best practice approach for managing SRM with RecoverPoint would be to always run Test Run Rcovery Mode first to check the integrity of the data on your VMs followed by actual Run Recovery mode if you wanted to invoke failover.

Checking ELAB

I cant find info about the dell storages : Dell Equallogic PS6100 Dell Equallogic PS4100 ?

can anyone check and confirm ?

for point 2 , if the dell storages are supported by RP , I need the document tells the compatability for versions

point 3 : so no problems if i mount datastores manually from RP after Synconization ? wont that make any issues for ESXi if changes are loaded for datastores ?

4) I just want to see if SRM is a must or RP can do the job

5) Appliences will work if the other is failed , so why cant I use one at each site ? can you explain ?

Thanks
