Unable to Access iDRAC After Reset

I have forgotten the iDRAC IP address. I ran an IP scanner and reset the iDRAC using the front-side button by pressing it for 16 seconds, which caused the iDRAC to reboot. However, after that, I tried the default IP address, 192.168.0.120, but I was unable to access it. Please help me reset the IP address

The R740xd idrac switches to DHCP by default when factory reset. I blv it gets 0.0.0.0 if no dhcp address is recvd. You can try this to connect to it from the front panel if you dont want to reboot the system:

000130077 : https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000130077/poweredge-how-to-use-the-idrac-direct-feature

fyi, this wont work if you disabled the front port, but its enabled by default:
Note: On the server, you can enable or disable the iDRAC Direct USB Port using the system BIOS. Navigate to System BIOS > Integrated Devices

Hi,

a 16-second press of the iDRAC's front-panel button initiates a factory reset, reverting its IP address to the default (usually 192.168.0.120). Since you can't access it at that address, several things could be wrong:

  • Incorrect Default IP: The default IP might not be 192.168.0.120 for your specific iDRAC model. Check your server's documentation for the correct default.
  • Network Connectivity: Ensure your computer and the server are on the same network segment. A simple ping to the server's management network interface might help confirm this.
  • DHCP: The iDRAC might be configured to obtain an IP address automatically via DHCP. Check your DHCP server's lease information to see if it assigned an IP to the iDRAC.
  • Firewall: Firewalls on either your computer or the server could be blocking access to the iDRAC's default port (typically 443).
  • Reset Incompletely: The reset might not have completed successfully. Try powering down the server completely, waiting a few minutes, and then powering it back on.
  • Cable Issues: Verify the network cable is properly connected to both the server and your computer.

To proceed, please tell me:

  1. iDRAC Model: What is the exact model of your iDRAC?
  2. Server Model: What is the model of the server?
  3. Network Configuration: Are you using DHCP or a static IP address for your server's management network?

With this information, I can offer more specific troubleshooting steps.

@Dell-Martin S

  1. iDRAC Model: iDrac 9 Express
  2. Server Model: PowerEdge R740xd
  3. Network Configuration: static IP address

On the 17th Gen Dell/EMC PowerEdge R470, using latest iDRAC and BIOS combination as of 2025-09-01, when an iDRAC "factory reset" operation is performed, the card defaults to DHCP Mode.

I would hope that it, if DHCP fails for 90 seconds (or some Dell-selected arbitrary time delay), it would default to a static IPv4 address.  But I guess those days are behind us.

UPDATE: I do not know if/how these settings relate to those when the chassis is unboxed from the Dell factory servicing western Europe (Those settings may be (paradoxically) different than what the firmware does when one performs a "Factory Reset" operation )

Since 14G servers, the idrac comes from the factory set to dhcp. When setting the idrac to factory, there is an option to retain the network and user configs, its the first choice if using the idrac gui. The command line also has a parameter that will do the same. As for a failover to a static ip, if you did a total reset to factory, that would wipe any IPs, so which static ip would it fail over to and on what subnet and gateway?

Three also seems to be a $0 ordering option to pre-configure the iDRAC factory defaults to have a "Static IP" (it doesn't specify or offer to let you specify what IP that is, though >:}, or netmask, or GW, etc... etc... )
