RAID Volume keeps failing on PERCH H710 on R620
Hi people,
I have a client with a few Dell R620 servers with PERC H710 mini RAID controller and he mounted SSD drives in them. Some of these SSDs are set up in RAID 1 array and some in RAID 10. These are not enterprise SSD drives, they are commercials.
The problem is that every now and then the RAID 10 array gets unavailable. As you can guess, all the virtual machines running on this volume will be inaccessible. Going for a server restart and getting into the PERC configuration screen, all I have to do is import foreign disks and all is good. In the background it will synchronize the disks and all works well until next time the volume becomes inaccessible.
Server's drivers are up to date on the PERC controller, BIOS, etc. Anyone has any idea what might be the problem here?
Thanks,
Adrian

Well, you already identified the problem: the drives. They aren't compatible. They are likely cheap consumer (desktop/laptop) drives, so they lack the programming to know how to behave in a RAID array and to respond to specific commands from the PERC, and when the drives don't respond correctly or timely, the PERC takes them offline assuming they are malfunctioning (which they are, according to the specifications of the controller).
If it matters if the data goes offline, then get the right drives. If you can live with it, then you saved yourself some money. "Some" consumer drives play better than others - Intel tends to work better than Samsung, for example - but you should expect problems if you use non-certified hardware, or at least it should be your first suspicion when there are problems.
Drivers would be irrelevant here - make sure your system and RAID and drive firmware are up to date for the best chance of success.
