R720xd with Perc H710 Mini no-raid Proxmox

Hello,

I have a server Dell R720xd with Perc h710 mini raid controller.

I need to install Proxmox in my server  and i want to use ZFS, so i don't want to use any hardware raid like Raid0.

Does Server and raid allow me to do this?

if not

How can i flash my raid controller?

Thank you

Stefanos

Hello Stefgrifon,

The rear backplane daisy chain off the front backplane. It uses the same controller as the front backplane.

Page 107-108 Owners manual :

Figure 71 shows the cabling for the optional 2.5" x2 rear backplane.

I don't see any support for using a separate controller to the rear backplane.

Hello,

no sorry, PERC h710 works with RAID volume, so if you want to have hard drive recognized by OS you have to create a RAID0 with one disk.

Sorry, what you mean by "flash" the raid controller?

Thanks

Marco

If by that you mean "how do I flash this controller with the 'IT firmware' from the manufacturer that may give you true 'pass-through' capability", then you are on your own. You will need to run a third-party command tool with a /force switch to force-replace the firmware. That is not supported here as there are other Dell controllers for this server that do support pass-through (H310 and the HBA).

Thank you all for your help.

I will make flash to controller with ’it firmware’.

After that I want the rear flex bay backplane (there I have 2 ssd 2,5’) to connect directly to the motherboard without being connected with the raid controller.

Is that possible or must I find a pcie card?

Thank  you for your reply.

If I don’t use at all the rear backplane, Can I use any kind of pcie sata card to handle the boot or  must i have a special card for that?

Hello Stefgrifon,

You may try. I can only point you to the Dell validated configurations.

The configuration you describe is not a supported configuration.

You may have to Disable the BIOS (on the PERC) to use other boot devices.
