R310 RAID controller upgrade - which card supports RAID 5 & 6?
Hello:
I am looking at purchasing a used PowerEdge R310 for a home file server. I have 4 @ 8TB SATA drives I wish to use in a hardware RAID5 configuration with Linux (no WINDOWS software RAID please). From the best I can tell from the photo (and contents sheet - both attached) of the desired server, it has a SAS 6/iR modular card in it, which only supports RAID 0 and 1. It seems that the drive backplane is hot-swap and connects directly to the motherboard. I've tried to determine which card to use that will support RAID5/6 but am a bit confused. I *think* the PERC H700 modular will work (3rd photo).
Can anyone verify the H700 modular works in the R310 or suggest the proper drive controller card?
Thanks in advance.
Peace and blessings,
JQ

So the H700 modular is not going to fit properly into an R310. You'll need to get a PCIe version like XXFVX along with a new cable. For the cable if you have a backplane with hot swap drives the part number will be N262J if you just have drop cables that plug directly into the rear of the drives and they aren't hot swappable you're going to want X394K.
Hope this helps.

Hi:
Thanks to both that responded. I decided to look at the PowerEdge R410 instead. The server I purchased has a H700 and cables in it and it was the same price as the R310 I was looking at. Added benefit is that it has two Xeon X5650 processsors.
Peace and blessings,
