E10-001
Can a person pass the E10-001 exam by self studying the EMC Information Storage and Management: Storing, Managing, and Protecting Digital Information in Classic, Virtualized, and Cloud Environments book? I work with storage daily at my 9-5 job. I want to save my training dollars for VNX Solutions Specialist Exam for Storage Administrators track.

Yes, if you are a working Storage Professional you should be able to clear E10-001 by just going through books bought listed in here https://education.emc.com/ismbook/ [Its the same you mentioned] EMC Education do stress for Official Training for those who are starting with Storage but as you mentioned that you work in a Storage Environment so my assumption is you should be able to grasp quickly!
On a personal note: I haven't spent on Training, I read the book page by page (for ISM v1)

Hi Bryan, you can also review the exam description document and try the practice test. The practice test will help guide you to areas that may require further studying.
Good luck - and let us know how you do!!

No Problem, Happy to help!
As Debi mentioned, do give a shot to Self Practice Exam...I am working in Storage Environment as well like yourself so in my case I gave the Self Practice Test twice to understand where do I stand and then I focused on the Syllabus accordingly! I didn't spend much time on things like RAID, Disk Types, EMC Storage Solution, Topologies and layers as I was through in that rather I read other stuff!

Certification do hold certain edge over your normal degree but thats not the main factor to get you hired. Its you and your interview skills. Storage Industry is still growing and I have seen multiskilled people getting hired for Storage Industry so I do not think that Certifications will earn you job. Its just to give you an edge over people.
As far as, ISM is concerned and since you do not have any prior experience in Storage or related terms I would recommend you to go for Instructorled Training so that you can clarify your doubts on the spot! Remember, ISM is a lynchpin or I would say foundation of your career, more your basic concepts are clear easier the understanding in future w.r.t to job as well as Interviews will go!
I also understand as far as these trainings are concerned for asian countries $ conversion makes it impossible for students to go for it on their own. In those scenarios, I would say read the book and if you have any doubts feel free to ask here on ECN. With time permitting you will get the answers from our community experts!
Last but not the least, if you are not opting for Instructorled Training make sure you give the Practice Exam UNTIL you are satisfied with your score!

I just finished by B.Tech in Computer Engineering. And I really want to start my carrier in Storage Domain.
So looking forward to start with basic EMCISA certification, already start reading ISM book.
As I don't have hands on experience in any storage technology/devices, is it worthwhile to go for this exam ???
Because I am a fresher, people told me to basic certification first then only I'll get some good job in storage field.

It was implied when I said, until you are satisfied. I meant to say the exact same which you mentioned! Of course, I don't want anyone to keep on giving practice test again and again with out clarifying the doubts from the last test he/she gave!
Anyways, thanks for clearing this out!

I agree with Ankit that having a certification does not automatically equal a job offer. And yes, I think it does give you an edge over others who do not. However on the practice test advice I do not agree. The free practice test offered with any of the EMC Proven Professional exams was designed to be taken once to help you identify areas where you need to focus your studies. Then after studying you would take the practice test again to confirm you have learned the skills represented by those questions you had difficulty with. Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for all d crucial info. Appreciate your response !!!
As you said, I will first try on that practice test and once I get a confidence with some good score, will go for the ISM certification exam.
I am bit concern about job because I tried to find some storage domain companies where I can start as a fresher or trainee/intern in storage filed. So that it will help me to get hands on experience in this area. But unfortunately its really hard to find such type of client/company here in India who can offer such type of trainee or intern role.

The major issue is, everybody wants an experienced candidate but from somewhere a fresher needs to start to get an experience.

I can totally understand how you must be feeling, I was in your shoe few years back myself.
I see the you have added me on LinkedIn and you live in Gujarat, India.
Let me be very honest with you, there are very few companies in Gujarat where you will find Job Openings and most of their requirement are for Experience Storage Admin so if you are really interested in this Domain you might need to consider relocating to any of below state(s) as per your convinience where the industry has a resource requirement for this domain.
Bangalore
New Delhi (Mostly, NCR/Gurgaon Region)
Chennai
Hyderabad
I'm from Mumbai and I have moved to Bangalore myself!

Your advice has given me a bit of breathing place, thanks to accept my request on LinkedIn.

I completely agree with you that location does matter. So that I'm ready to relocate anywhere in India. Currently looking for Bangalore as there are multiple opening I have seen on job portals in this Domain.
But what are the eligibility criteria to get a job as a intern/fresher/trainee on this domain in Bangalore/Delhi/Chennai/Hyderabad ..?? and how to avail such opportunities ??
I would be glad to know more about it.
Thanks.

Create an account on leading Job Portals or a Particular company's job portal page For Eg.: EMC Me – Careers, Company, Social Media
Try and keep your details simple and precise!
