"Media Suite 12" Disc That Came With Dell External DW316 Not Installing

The first thing I did after I got my DW316 from Best Buy was try to install the "CyberLink Media Suite 12" that came with the external disc drive. Upon trying to run "Setup.exe" I am told that an admin has blocked the program from running. I AM THE ADMIN!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Marking this as Dell Solution for visibility on the thread. Please note this is still being looked into:

Thanks for bringing the issue to our attention. If you're using an External DW316 drive, our engineering teams have suggested to download and install the file at this link.

For us to investigate the issue further kindly share this information below:

  1. A screenshot of the error message you encounter.

  2. The build information of CyberLink Media Suite, which can be found in the “info.ini” file under the \CMS directory.

The info.ini file should be located on the install disc that shipped with the drive. It's also possible the disc might have the full version on the label.

Hi Jaxwelder :

What is your computer make / model and Windows OS?

You might have better luck posting your question in the Storage, Drives & Media board of this Dell community if the information I've posted below isn't helpful.

Also see Artie John's 03-May-2024 topic DW316 in the Windows General board about a similar problem they are having installing Media Suite 12.  You might want to post in that topic and ask Artie if they found a solution.

According to the DW316 page on the Dell store at https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-usb-slim-dvd-rw-drive-dw316/apd/429-aauq/storage-drives-media the external DW316 optical drive has a USB 2.0 connection and is "pre-loaded" with Media Suite 10 (released in 2012) so it must be an older model.  According to the system requirements at https://www.cyberlink.com/support-center/faq/content?id=14842 Media Suite 10 is only compatible with Win 7 and older OSs.

CyberLink's Media Suite 12 was released in 2014 and according to the system requirements at https://www.cyberlink.com/support-center/faq/content?id=17569 this version is compatible with Win 8.x and older OSs.  Depending on your OS, that might be why you're seeing an installation error.  If you haven't already done so, right-click the Setup.exe executable and choose "Run as Administrator" to see if that allows the installation to run to completion.

The current CyberLink Media Suite 16 is compatible with Win 7 to Win 10 and costs anywhere from $129.95 USD (Ultra edition) to $149.95 USD (Ultimate edition) so it's possible the installation disk for CyberLink Media Suite 12 that was bundled with your external DW316 optical drive is a trial version that locks most of the features after 30 days unless you upgrade and purchase a paid subscription.  That's just a guess on my part, though.

Dell currently offers a UWP (Universal Windows Platform / Microsoft Store) app called CyberLink Media Suite Essentials at https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/media-suite-essentials-for-dell/9NN8BSS5N72F that can be installed on Dell-branded computers with Win 10 or higher.  Unfortunately, the Dell support article How to Download and Install CyberLink Media Suite Essentials notes "CyberLink Media Suite Essentials is not available for external DVD or Blu-ray players" and "Dell computers without an internal DVD player or Blu-ray player will redirect to a paid version of the software".

My DW316 came with Cyberlink Media Suite 12 DVD marked as "OEM Version not for resale".  Had the same problem being blocked from installing the bundled software.  Running Setup.exe as administrator did not work.

I was able to install and run the Cyberlink Media Essentials app on a Win 11 Alienware laptop and play some old DVD footage from the DW316 using "Power Media Player for Dell".  I wasn't redirected to a paid version and the software does not indicate that it is a trial version.  If it is, I guess I'll find out when the trial period expires.

Munchkin76:

Did you try to install the Dell Optical Drive DW316 CMS Application suggested in employee DELL-Brad L's 13-Feb-2025 solution <above>? This application is supported on Win 10/11 systems and should install CyberLink Media Suite (CMS) Version 16 on your computer.  The installation instructions are posted at the bottom of the download page  <here> (i.e., download and unzip DELL_DW316_CMS_Application_A00.zip, double-click Setup.exe in the \CMS subfolder to start the installation).

If that does not successfully install Media Suite 16 post back and let us know your Dell computer model, the version and OS build of your Win 11 OS [open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver] and BIOS version.  To find your current BIOS version open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information, and look for the field named "BIOS Version / Date" in the summary. A screenshot of any warning or error message you see would also be helpful.

@Munchkin76 I just tested lmacri's method on a home system - download/unzip file, run the setup.exe, and it let me install it. I can try running it again on another system, this home system had an optical drive but not the DW316. I just wanted to see if any other errors might show up.

When you get time, lmacri's request will be really helpful. Especially if the steps provided don't seem to work on your system.

@lmacri thank you so much for all of the help on this!

@TRchief16 Were you able to download the file, unzip/extract it, and then run the setup.exe directly from the files off the hard drive? It should install from what I have been told from other users/my testing, but just wanted to make sure I am not missing anything.

Also, on your system are you using the DW316?

@DELL-Brad L The download only installs up to 78 percent then totally disappears like it was never there. Windows 11, Brand new dell all in one. No excuses.

@DELL-Brad L I downloaded the item in the link you provided. When I opened the app, it took me to a browser where I could purchase a current version of the CyberLink suite.

I should be able to use the version that came with my DW316 drive that was purchased 2 months ago.

I also tried to load the disk setting compatibility mode to Windows 8 and ran the UNBLOCK command for the setup.exe file. All attempts ended with the same message telling me that the program is being blocked by the administrator.

At this point I have spent hours trying to install software that should load effortlessly on to my new drive and laptop.

Hi David Ovando:

I don't have a computer with a Win 11 v24H2 OS I can use to test, but please see the instructions in my 27-Mar-2025 post <above>.  To install the CyberLink Media Suite (CMS) Version 16 compatible with Windows 10/11 try the following:

  1. Download the Dell Optical Drive DW316 CMS Application (DELL_DW316_CMS_Application_A00.zip, rel. 13-Jan-2025) and save it to your hard drive.  In my sample image below I saved that .ZIP file in my Downloads folder in a new subfolder I created called CMS_Installer (i.e., at C:\Users\<myusername>\Downloads\CMS_Installer).
  2. Unzip the DELL_DW316_CMS_Application_A00.zip file.
  3. Open the unzipped \CMS subfolder and locate the Setup.exe file.
  4. Right-click Setup.exe and choose "Run as Administrator" to start the installation.

@DELL-Brad L Hi!  Just bought a Dell DW316 and was surprised (and pleased!) to find that it came with a Cyberlink install dvd.  Wouldn't install, though.

The info on the Dell site only talks about Media Suite in conjunction with a Dell computer, and the error message ("This software can only be installed on specify system") implies that may be the problem, since neither of my computers are Dell.

The Cyberlink site has nothing called Media Suite except a collection of other products.

Is this supposed to be an actual version of Media Suite 12, or is it just a hook that will then expire if you don't pay an additional fee?  If the latter, then I won't bother.  If it is supposed to be a real copy of the software, though, I would like to try it.

I followed the link above (this link.) and downloaded the specified file.  When I unzipped and ran it as administrator, I got the same message as before,  "This software can only be installed on specify system".   I got the same message when I used an adminstrator command prompt to run it.  Ditto on my laptop, with or without the drive actually plugged in.  Both computers are running Windows 11; neither is a Dell.  Please see below for the attached error message and info.ini from unzipped folder.
