DW316 Installation issue

I recently purchased a new Dell Inspiron 15 3520 and the DW316 external USB DVD player.  The DVD came with the Media Suite 12.  When running the auto setup, I get a message that the application is blocked by the system administrator.  Sine I am the only user I think that would make me the system administrator.  How Do I resolve this issue?

Marking this as Dell Solution for visibility on the thread. Please note this is still being looked into:

Thanks for bringing the issue to our attention. If you're using an External DW316 drive, our engineering teams have suggested to download and install the file at this link.

For us to investigate the issue further kindly share this information below:

  1. A screenshot of the error message you encounter.

  2. The build information of CyberLink Media Suite, which can be found in the “info.ini” file under the \CMS directory.

The info.ini file should be located on the install disc that shipped with the drive. It's also possible the disc might have the full version on the label.

Hi aivas45:

Does your new Dell Inspiron 15 3520 have a Win 11 operating system?

You might find some helpful hints in my 15-Jun-2024 post in Jaxwelder's "Media Suite 12" Disc That Came With Dell External DW316 Not Installing, including the suggestion to right-click the Setup.exe executable for Media Suite 12 and choose "Run as Administrator" to see if that allows the installation to run to completion.  Unfortunately, Jaxwelder never posted back to report if that solved their problem.

My post in Jaxwelder's topic also mentions that CyberLink's Media Suite 12 was released in 2014 and that the system requirements on the CyberLink site at https://www.cyberlink.com/support-center/faq/content?id=17569 state that this software is compatible with Win 8.x and older OSs, so it's also possible that installation of this software is failing because it is not compatible with your (presumably) newer OS.

@lmacri

Thank you for your response.  I am having the same issue trying to install from the OEM Cyberlink Media Suite 12 DVD that came with my DW316.

I suspect the bundled software may not be compatible with newer versions of Windows.  The DW316 packaging indicates date of manufacture Aug 2024,  the bundled disc has a 2022 copyright on the label and all the files stored on it are dated 30 Jan 2023 so it seems reasonable to expect this software to work on a current OS.

I tried to install on an old Alienware M17X running Win10 and a current M18R2 running Win11.  Same problem on both.  Running setup.exe as administrator does not work either.

As an alternative the OS directed me to the Microsoft Store where all the "free" options on offer constantly flood you with popups to upgrade to a paid version.

All I wanted to do was play some old video footage stored on a DVD.

The DW316 works well in all other respects.

Yes, same problem here.  I have an Inspiron 15 3530, bought direct from dell.co.uk a few weeks ago and running Windows 11.

I have since bought a Dell DW316 CD/DVD drive from the same source.  I saw this drive recommended on another site because it comes with Cyberlink Media Suite software and this justified the price premium over other similar drives available.

Has anyone been able to install this software using Windows 11, please?  If not, it is astonishing that Dell should sell a product bundled with software that cannot be used with the current version of Windows - it smacks of sharp practice.

Hi MikeyMikey38:

Common Sense1 posted a possible solution on 28-Dec-2024 in Trevor76's Cyberlink Media Suite 12 Will Not Install that you might want to try.  Post in that topic if you have any questions about that workaround.

I just bought a new 5550 and the separate add-on DVD player DW316. I plugged it in and inserted a Jean Harlow movie. The light blinked and when I go to SETTINGS, it sees the player, but there's no control panel or way to make it start playing. Sorry about the dangling participle. How do you get the DW316 to play a movie?

Add note: I downloaded the Microsoft player but it balks and refuses to start and suggests I try again.

Hi MichaelinChatsworth:

Did you ever manage to get your movie DVD to play?

I was hesitant to replying since I don't have a Dell DW316 external USB optical drive, but if you're still stuck post back and let us know your full Dell computer model (e.g., Precision 5550, Latitude 5550, Latitude E5550), Windows OS [open a run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver to find your version and OS build number], and your CyberLink Media Suite version, if installed.

Also let us know if it's just the one DVD movie that won't play (which could indicate a damaged DVD, a missing video codec, or a problem with the digital rights of the DVD) or if you can't get your computer to recognize your optical drive and/or play any DVD you insert in your DW316 optical drive.

FYI, my previous computer had an internal optical drive and I used VideoLAN's free VLC Media Player as my default media player for everything except audio files (since I used iTunes for Windows to rip CDs and organize my music library).

Hi Imacri, and thanks for your reply. My new Dell is the 5550, and the problem was just figuring out Windows 11, which does not feature the simple MY COMPUTER feature, which pops up a display of all the components of your rig and allows you to click on and access them. As it does not contain a DVD player, I had to download a free DVD player, and once I did that, I managed to affix a button to the little strip along the bottom, and now it works as expected. The thirty dollar player connects easily via the single USB plug, works fine, and does DVD and Blu-ray.

I also appreciate that the Dell still has the headphone jack, so when doing a movie, I can use simple earbuds or my killer Sony headphones connected with the cord, which works without using the battery.

I was fine with my old Dell laptop, and while the new one has a lighted keyboard and touch screen, which I use and like, it does not well accommodate those of us who have an older printer or need access to a camera chip or DVDs. I only finally bought the new one because the old one was old enough to buy Scotch and was stuck on Windows 7. My bank, among others, refused to connect to it.

My now ancient Panasonic Lummox camera also came with a camera to USB cord, and I figured out how to get the new Dell to think of it as the D: drive and I can download images from the chip that way.

@MichaelinChatsworth

How did you affix the buttons at the bottom.  My video will come up but I can't get it to play, no buttons at the bottom..

@Luditte By buttons on the bottom I mean I got it to attach the icon to the taskbar. I forget for sure, but I think when you load and open it, it asks if you want to add the icon to the taskbar. Click YES and it'll be there from then on.

Hi @DELL-Brad L :

Just an FYI that JayNine posted today in Trevor76's Cyberlink Media Suite 12 will not instal that the Dell Optical Drive DW316 CMS Application for Win 10 and Win 11 you suggested <above> successfully installed Media Suite 16 installed on their computer.

Kudos to Dell for posting this application for testing by DW316 owners .
