V305, unsuitable cartridge problem
I installed a new color & black & white cartridge in my printer, printed a test page, but came back the next day and kept getting an "unsuitable cartridge" & "replace left cartridge" (black). I've done everything I can think of, including downloading new drivers, and the problem persists. The cartridges are brand new Dell series...9 for the black one...but won't work. Is there something I can do to remedy this, or is the printer just shot? This V305 hasn't gotten a lot of use, and has never been clunked or bumped, so I am puzzled.

cvault1,
If you unplug the printer from the wall and remove the power brick for 60 seconds, this will reset any error messages the printer has. I would then plug everything back in.
Power on the printer.
Open the printer(with the power on) and take out the Dell Series 9 black cartridge and then reseat it. I would then take out the color Dell Series 9 ink cartridge and reseat it. Now close the printer and it will print an alignment page.
Any error messages?
black cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)
photo cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)
Dell Series 9 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.
Dell Series 9 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.
It's possible to get a Dell Series 9 ink cartridge with a bad sensor. I would take these back to the place of purchase for a replacement.

Hi again. I did what you suggested, with the same results: "Left cartridge error. Replace the ink cartridge". I put in another new black cartridge...same thing. I think this printer is going to need replacement.

cvault1,
Did you try the old cartridge?

I tried the old cartridge, but it's getting pretty ratty for printing....that's why I got the new cartridges. It took the black one for a while, then started with the incompatible cartridge messages, replace left one, etc. I think something is internally wrong with what governs this printer. Something has burned out, or is "mentally unstable" in its messaging. I'm pretty-well set on just getting a more reliable printer. If you have to spend days trying to fix something, then it's a sign you need a better machine.
