Printer not compatible with Windows8
First, I am not a computer whiz. I have had my new CPU Inspiron 6605 for about six months. When I bought it, I asked Tech Aid if it would be compatible with all of my other components, which are all Dell. I very seldom use my printer and do not know if it the problem started immediately but when I used it, it would not print. I tried all of the the troubleshooting suggestions but always got the message that my printer was not communicating with my computer. Just today, I noticed a little flag on the Bar and clicked on it. Among other messages, it said that my computer was not compatible with Windows8. There was not a drive for it. I followed all the instruction that I thought would give suggestions about how to solver the problem. Some said that it might be compatible with a Windows & drive. I ended up running a diagnostic, which the site instructed me to do. . There was a note saying that it may take 60 minutes. It sat on a page saying Gathering Information, with the little four blocks rotating for an hour an a half with not results. My last CPU used VISTA (and I wish to hell that I still had it) and not Windows 7. Is there anything I can do without having to buy a new printer ? I was very disappointed with Windows8 and I am now thinking that Dell is not the best way to go.

Rick: I followed your directions and when I clicked on setup I got a panel saying "Installation Error": "You version of Windows operating system does not work with you new Dell printer." I think it must be impossible to make them compatible and if it were possible you would have been able to do it. Thank for your help but I will just be satisfied with having my nephew do my printing for me.

Hi kycol1,
Some old devices may not work with windows 8 as the compatible drivers may not be available. Please let me know the printer model and how you are trying to connect it to the system (wireless, USB etc.). I will check if it is possible to get the printer working with Windows 8.
Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.

kycol1,
Dell does not have Windows 8 drivers for this printer. This may or may not work.
First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.
Disconnect the printer.
Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.
Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Download the Vista 32-bit drivers for Windows 8 32-bit or the Vista 64-bit drivers for Windows 8 64-bit. Install the Vista drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on).
Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...
Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)
Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications. If you did not install any virus program, then Windows Defender is the default. Try reading...

As I said, I am not a computer whiz and most everything beyond just the operation of e-mails, browsing and printing (when it works) is beyond me. In addition I am 79 years old which complicates the situation.
First ,is the message from Dell-Amogh G about “Compatibility mode” an alternative to the process Rick gave me in his first message? If so , I think I can deal with that. If not, I can get as far as disconnecting the printer on Rick's procedure. The next step of “running the patch” leaves me cold. All I see on the page when I click on “run patch” is a page with some downloads and I have no idea which one to download. I have not gone beyond that in the instructions, so I do not know if I could get further than that.
As you can see, it may not be possible for me to follow your instructions. If that is the case, I will continue to just copy and e-mail what I need printed to my nephew and he can print it. At my age, I really do not want to buy a new printer. I feel somewhat put out that I was told that the printer would be compatible with my new CPU but not told it would not be compatible with Windows8. I do appreciate your attempts to help.

kycol1,
The patch, located
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails?DriverId=R166248&FileId=2731118104&DriverName=Dell%20Photo%20All-in-One%20Printer%20926%2C%20v.G5%2C%20A00&productCode=xps-L701x&urlProductCode=False
Is a printer cleanup utility and removes the printer from your system. The patch should be run to completely remove the printer. It should be run on your system, after the printer is not usb cable connected.
The procedure above explains to them check to make sure the printer is properly removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal
Then download the proper Vista drivers, 32-bit or 64-bit from the first thread at Dell 926 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)
Install the drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode

OK. I did muddle my way through to removing the printer and did the unzip thing. When I went to the Compatibility Mode, however I got the '403-forbidden—do not have permission.” I am sure that I set myself up as administrator but when I clicked on “run as administrator” I got the same message.
As far as “finding” the “setup.exe file,” as far as I can determine there is no “find application” on windows8. I opened “all applications.” Does the icon on windows8 have a different name?

kycol1,
Hit the Windows key and the r keys at the same time. Type
C:\Drivers
Look there for the folder that was created from the printer file. If you cannot find it, then try clicking on the link below.
file:///C:/dell/drivers/
Find the folder for the printer and right click on setup, left click properties and change it to the Vista SP2 compatibility mode.
The right click on setup, left click run as administrator.

Rick: I spent several stressful and tiring hours on this and I remember removing the printer but I don't remember creating a folder for the printer. Anyway I followed your directions, except that the File:///C/dell/drivers file was not highlighted. I put it in the run function and it did bring up a page that had a R146832 file folder that was created on 7/12. I followed your instruction on that and when I got to properties there was no reference to Vista compatibility. There was a window with
R146832 in it. AM I on the right track? Do I change that the the vista compatible mode? am always hesitant to do things as I have on occasion done things that required me to get paid assistance to correct.

Rick: I clicked on the R146832 and there were two setups listed: one for application and one for configuration. The application properties brough up a page with a compatibility option which already had Vista SP2 in it. I ran that as Administrator. Iconnected the printer and turned it on. When Itried to print something I got the message "the selected printer is not available or not installed correctly." I am about lost. I have never gotten a message tellingme to connect the printer to the CPU (although I did) not instructingme to install it. I think I am about ready to give up on this. Apparently window8 just wants everyone to buy a new printer. Thank for your help.

Sorry, my error.
Hit the Windows key and the r keys at the same time. Type
C:\dell\drivers\R146832
This should bring up the follder with setup. Look for setup.exe and right click on it, left click properties. You should see something like Compatibility mode

kycol1,
Sorry to hear that the printer would not install. Had only a few problems wit printers not installing. Operating system not in English and corrupt operatign systems. A few virus programs and firewalls blocking communications.
Take care,
Rick
