Optiplex 755 w/ HP 520 Deskjet Printer - can't get it to work

Hi, I recently upgraded my Dell Optiplex 755 EnergySmart MT to Windows 7.0.  I have an HP Deskjet 520, purchased c. 2000, which I'd like to be able to keep using on the Optiplex 755 -  because it ran well on Windows XP and is still in good working order - but, I can't seem to find the necessary driver(s).

HP stopped supporting this printer a long time ago.  I'd be very interested in any suggestions anyone might have for getting it to run on Windows 7.0.  When I plug the Deskjet 520 into the Optiplex 755, the printer lights up so the parallel port is definitely connecting.

Thanks.

gef2014,

When you installed the operating system, did you install the drivers in the correct order? How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Is this printer wired or wireless?

Does this printer use a usb port or a parallel port adapter?

1. Remember that parallel ports, cables, and devices ARE NOT hot-swappable. Power down PC and devices before connecting/dis-connecting or you might damage something.

2. Most parallel printers are not Plug-N-Play. You will have to "Add a Printer" and select proper (or close match) driver yourself. For a printer that old, you might try Generic Inkjet or HP Universal driver.

3. Due to many factors (age, driver support, not USB, etc.) your best bet would be to buy a new USB-based printer. A simple InkJet on sale at Staples or OfficeDepot is about $30 these days. You could probably get a laser for under $100.

However, be sure to NOT get a GDI or WinPrinter (especially when shopping on the low-end). They are nothing but trouble.
