AIO 810 Can't Scan After Re-Install

My PC is a Dell Dimension 9100, 4 GB RAM, XP Pro SP3 500-GB HD.

I am most exceedingly frustrated with my 810. For years it has worked flawlessly. A few weeks ago I replaced the C:\ drive with a new drive and reinstalled the 810 from the Dell CD that came with the 810. I think it's all in a folder called C:\DELL   .

It prints normally and copies from its panel "copy" button but will not scan nor copy from the on-screen menu (or whatever the thingie that pops up when you double-click its icon).

Trying to get it to scan or copy from the computer throws up an error screen that says, in part, "Scan was not seuccessful" and chides me to check cables, recycle power, etc. No joy.

I then downloaded new drivers from Dell, still no joy. I have reinstalled several times with the same result.

Does anyone have a fix for such a situation? Thanks in advance for any help!

Terry,

Try the procedure below and see what happens.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed.
Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the proper drivers or use the Dell Printer disk.

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

 Dell 810 All-In-One-Printer owners thread

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

Terry,

Start, all programs, Dell Printers

or a similar path.  I think the printer uses the Dell All-In-One Center and it can be found there.

Strange that it didn't create a shortcut on the desktop.

Terry,

You can print, just not scan or fax.

Do you have the printer disk?

Dp you have the OCR Program installed?

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Hi, Rick--

Sri about that. I guess I'm a newbie after all!

In reply to yours:

You can print, just not scan or fax.  Yes. Don't need FAX--have stand-alone FAX machine

Do you have the printer disk?  Yes

Dp you have the OCR Program installed?  Don't know; if it's on the disk, yes

What virus program and firewall are you using?  NAV 2011 and the windows XP firewall

Symptoms:           CAN:  Print from computer and copy from printer panel

CANNOT:  Scan or copy from computer

It appears that all files pertaining to the 810 are in C:\DELL

Terry,

Sorry for the delay, work.

Start, all programs, ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint, ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint

is your OCR Program. If you don't have this program, then...

then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Norton shouldn't be a problem, but just in case, check the firewall settings. Allow a printer past Norton

Rick--

Work? What's that? Oh, yes; I remember. That was a long time ago. I'll be 80 in Aug. Groan!

Thanks for the reply. Will give it a shot this afternoon. And I have ABBYY.

Stay tuned for updates--film at eleven!

I do have ABBYY in C:\Program Files\ABBYY.... Is that where it should be?

Terry,

Sorry for the delay, work. :emotion-9:

Try reading...

Update list of applications to send scans to

Make sure the printer is allowed past your virus program and firewall.

Rick--

I read the info you suggested, but all looks OK when I open the Advanced screens.

I then removed the printer using Control Panel/Add/Remove.

Removed Dell folder from C:\ drive.

Used CD to install and near the end of the install error popped up saying that I needed to install "dlcgdr5c.dll"

Searched computer and the install CD for the file--No joy

Technology does not like me.

The last time it was installed recently it would print OK and copy from the printer "Copy" button OK. However, would not scan from the "Scan" button, nor scan or copy from the computer.

However--using the Windows/Twain scan software, it scans. This would indicate something is missing in the Dell software preventing the computer from talking to the scan/copy routine.

Does any of this make sense?

Rick--

That did it!

I can't thank you enough for taking time with an old guy who knows just enough about computers to be dangerous! I wish I knew what was snagging the works--maybe too many fragments scattered about?

One last question. Where can I find the file that actually starts the 810? I used to have an icon on my desktop for that purpose. I don't want to stumble about and mess something up!

Many thanks again--Terry

Rick--

Thanks again for that. And I was puzzled at that, too. It was there for years after first install 4 yrs ago, but this latest complete refiguration (new drives, increased RAM) certainly wreaked havoc in some areas.

It was a pleasure to have met you, sir. I shall wave your banner high when asked for help!

Cheers--Terry
