WD19DC incorrectly identifies 240watt powersupply

Hello Forum,

I have a 7760 and a 7530 that both have the same issues.  I have a wd19dc dock that I can only get one of the 2 thunderbolt leds to illuminate when I use the doc.  On every boot boot with the 7760 and the wd19dc connected I get the warning screen that says I have the wrong power supply attached.  I have the most current firmware on the wd19dc and 7760.  Im not sure where to go next.  My power adapters are older but work without issue on the 7760.  I have 3 I have tried.  DA210pe1-00, LA240pm160, (flextronix) GA240PE1-00.  None of these works in that I they all give me the warnings about their wattages being insufficient when plugged into the WD19DC.  They are all 240 watt supplies so I am not sure what to try next.  Anyone else have issues like this and found a way to get the full functionality out of the wd19dc and not warnings?

Thank you for the help!!

Matt

The Precision 7760 needs 240W, so it's not going to get enough power with a 240W adapter connected to the dock, which needs power of its own.  With a 240W adapter, the dock can deliver 210W to the system.

The older 15" 7530 needs 180W.  That should work without issue with a 240W adapter connected to the dock.  If it doesn't, and you've tried multiple adapters the most likely issue is a damaged or defective DC jack in the docking station itself.

Hello Ejn63,

Thank you for the response.  Ok, does dell make a 280watt or 300 watt supply I should be using?  Or would this issue go away having a 240 watt plugged into the dock and another into the laptop?  The Im going to assume the power jack is not damages as this dock has hardly seen any use.  But Ill keep that in mind.

Upon some further digging I did discover this dell document about compatibility.  Maybe the document is incorrect in its statements.  But it supposedly says the WD19dc is compatible with the laptop delivering 210watts to a 7760.  It does not indicate the single usb only.  I guess this could be the power in connector theory then, but Im surprised as this thing is basically never been used.  Could also be the older WD19dc firmware improperly identifies the 7760 with one of these older power supplies.  I imagine there is a communications protocol that is used at power up to get specs from the power supplies and used to make determinations about what its going to do.  Maybe these older model numbered supplies are not in the existing firmwares list.  But that is just a long shot guess.

Here is a link to the guide.

Thanks

Matt

There are higher wattage adapters shipped with high end workstation and Alienware systems, but the manual mentions only 180 or 240W -- my read on that is that even with a higher power adapter, the dock can only supply 210 W to a system.

You need a dedicated 240W USB-C or barrel charger for this system.

So the issues is not that system will not run, but Im getting only one light on with the thunderbolt connectors and the boot warning.  Im able to use the system, but the with the single light on the thunderbolt dual connector, I guess Im basically only getting a lack of charging and operating capabilities?  But using two barrel connectors maybe Im fine?  Ill work with the dock more and see if it has any issues.  I sure miss the old docks I had on my old M6500.  That Dock worked great just plop the laptop on it, it elevated it for air flow and had all the connections like these newer but did not use any connectors off the side.

Thanks for the help Ejn63!
