Memory upgrade for Precision 7740

Has anyone tried to upgrade memory for a Precision 7740 laptop? That is, mem not NOT bought from dell.

I tried to install the following RAM -- and failed?  Bought 2 pairs of the following mem.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Laptop Memory Model F4-3200C22D-64GRS   (CAS Latency: 22, Timing 22-22-22-52)

Laptop wont boot up and indicated "Invalid memory installed" by LED blink code.  I tried to install all possible RAM module configs - All 2 pairs (4x32 = 128GB total), each module individually (32GB) and each pair (2x64GB) individually . All attempts failed.  It's somewhat unlikely that I had 4 defect RAM modules.  I installed single and double modules as specified in setup/spec guide.

The mem spec should meet the memory spec for the 7740 laptop - as far as I can tell. See official Setup and Specification guide for Precision 7740.

However, the guide does not mention CAS Latency or time requirements.

Does anyone have any experience with mem upgrade?

Tech support cant help, because memory is not bought from Dell

I have doubts about 3200MHz memories working at this rate in these Precisions.

9th generation Intel are limited to 2666MHz and at the time they were sold on the dell website, if I remember correctly, for a short period there was an option to buy the 7540/7740 with up to 4x16gb 3200MHz (not 2x32gb or 4x32gb), but soon that option ran out ...

I've been using HyperX Impact 2666MHz CL15 for 3 years now on the 7540.

It works exactly as it should!

Of course it may very well be memory incompatibility. Crucial is generally the most compatible RAM for Dell systems. You could try removing the CMOS battery for 15 minutes then reinstalling the battery. I had to do the same when I installed Timetec RAM in my E6420.

On rare occasions, one or both could be dead. Try to remove all of your ram, and insert one of the new ones, see if it boots. You should be able to identify if at least one of them works. Either way, I'd return them just in case you got a pair that was not working properly.

I did exactly that. Tested each of the 4 modules alone. Always same error on bootup.  I am returning all of them and try Crucial mem...

Thanks for the feedback.  The manufacture of the GSkill ram I tried was Hynix, too.  The most obvious difference to your ram is the frequency, 2666 vs 3200...

I'll give this a try.  Was this a one time thing?  Did you experience any issues after you disconnected the cmos bat?

For what it is worth. I did one more mem config test.  I left 2 8GB modules of the original mem installed (primary mem slots) and installed 2 of the gskill modules to the secondary slots.  This worked with no problem.  See screenshots.  Maybe there's a problem with DDR4 3200 modules...?

This did not work.  Returning modules and replacing them with Crucial modules.  The Crucial websites contains a RAM finder for most computers with hazzle free guarantee.  Still going for faster RAM - 3200 instead of 2666 ...

I believe there is nothing better than Fury Impact 2666MHz CL15 for your 7740.

Yes, you are right - Just looked up the spec for my CPU, which is a i9-9880H. In fact, the RAM freq is limited to 2666.

Thanks for the tip - I am going to get the slower RAM then.

@McAlfso I have a Dell 7540, which I have the original Xeon E2276M upgraded to i9 9980HK (using a BGA rework station), then I bought a tow SAMSUNG 32G DDR4-3200 RAM to replace the original SAMSUNG 32G DDR4-2666 *2, my 7540 lighted on and I saw RAM ran at 3200 in BIOS, but the notebook is so unstable, it got a BSOD when starting Windows 11, and freeze when running the BIOS Diagnosic.

I am not sure it's because of uncompatibility with SAMSUNG' DDR4-3200, or totally unstable to run at 3200
