Upgrade from Software Raid to T420 server with H710

Hi i cuurently have a T7500 workstation configured as a NAS server running Open Media Vault with "snapraid" software raid with six disks, 3tb each, raid 6 which nets =/- 12 tb storage, using an LSI 9211 as HBA interface. Never had an issue.

I am upgrading hardware to the T420 server offering eight drive slots. The T420 has an H710 raid card. Will the H710 recognize the software raid and the new disks?

If not, will the T420 accept the LSI card and incorporate the software raid and the new disks straight from the other box?

Any insights to this upgrade will be greatly appreciated, both hardware and software comments...

Thank you...

Hi,

I tried to check for compatibility on Dell PCIe card LSI 9211 (DPN#3WDV5), it is not listed for T420. I am unsure if it would work for T420. Do try installing the hardware and let us know the outcome.

H710 migration would not be able to recognize software raid from third party RAID, as there is a specific metadata from PERC to migrate RAID.

It unfortunately won't work solely based on the fact that a software RAID will only function on the original OS it was built with.

@Ninemeister thank you for your reply. The scenario for using the software raid in the new box would be LSI HBA card, drives installed same order, and the OS would be from the old box. The dilemma i am facing "will the LSI 9211" work in the new T420 box, as the H710 will not recognize the software raid...
