Precision 3240 Compact, add an optical drive?
I have a Compact I9 unit. Meant to get an Optical Drive but neglected to add it. Have never taken the cover off. Purchased Oct 2020, Pro Support good until Nov 2023 but can't get through to Dell. Every try ends with blank screen and 'erroneous request' or something.

Corrected the thread title. The Precision 3240 Compact does not have an optical drive bay.

Why not just use a USB connected drive. Probably cheaper than an internal drive that will fit and no problem installing.
I have a USB drive that I use on client's PC's if needed. Works as well as an internal.

Dell are pretty unhelpful in getting part numbers etc for extras that you want to add you your own dell setup.
I'm also in the lookout for an internal DVD writer for my Precision 3650, but so far I have not found an exact match for a model number.
on looking at the CD/DVD drives available from Dell this one maybe of use to you but it does not list your own model. (closest match Precision Workstation 3431 SFF)
Optical Drive
others are listed here: CD/DVD Internal though your exact model may not be listed.

I cannot seem to find a "Dell Precision 3240 SFF" only the "Dell Precision 3240 USFF" or "Compact" as its called. are you sure you have the correct name of the Model of PC? The compact model has no slot for a Optical drive so only an external drive would work.

I can only find the compact model. It looks like other sellers mistakenly call it a "USFF." So as @Darkmoon5 said, only an external DVD drive will work.

I'm pretty sure there was an option to add an optical drive when I bought the pc. Also, the user manual has a section on installing an optical drive. If I am correct, then I'd just need to get a different case? Sales is no help, tech support non-existent despite my having pro support. This plus Dell's deal with Google to default to the cloud instead of internal storage has kind of soured me on Dell.

On what page did you find instructions on installing an optical drive? I could be wrong, but I couldn't find anything in the Service Manual. Setup and Specifications guide mentions optical drive "if available."
If it were possible to add an internal optical drive, it would need a different front bezel.
