Memory module SNPTN78YC/32G not recognized on 7920 Tower

Hi, I purchased a 32G memory module update for my Dell 7920 workstation has 2x16G RAM inserted in DIMM1 and DIMM2 slots. The model number is SNPTN78YC/32G. It is listed as compatible hardware for 7920 here.

Unfortunately, when I inserted the memory, it wasn't not recognized and the preboot power code showed a "Memory/RAM failure" (2 amber blinks, followed by 4 white blinks). I tried two different slots: the one just next to one of the already presents RAMs (number and the number 3. The result is the same.

Does anyone have any experience with this model? Thanks.

Update=Resolved-After installing the 32 GB RAM to another one of DIMM slots. Can now use the existing 4x8 GB RAM + new 32GB for a total of 64 GB RAM.

Hello,

what you are trying to do is not a supported configuration

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/precision-7920-workstation/precision_7920_om_pub/memory-configuration?guid=guid-ce1561c8-88a9-45e3-bc3b-762cbb37e073

According to that, you can use 2 slots ( aka 2 modules ) with 8 and 16 gb modules only

Hi, thanks for the information, I wasn't aware of this configuration table.

However, somehow my current configuration doesn't match any of the rows in the table. I have 32GB RAM in total, 2x16GB inserted in DIMM0 and DIMM1. For the two CPU version, which I have, the table shows 4x8GB modules as the only option. Or am I misunderstanding?

No, you are correct. But with not supported configurations, the trick is that one may work and another may not.

So right now the options are 2 : 1) you got sold faulty 32gb module/s  , 2) it's an unsupported configuration that has no chances of working if tried, 3) the modules are not dell oem for this unit ( dell systems can be picky )
