Dell Precision 490 part numbers for Media card reader and cable.

Question

Hello everyone.

Blast from the past question here.

I am trying to add a media card reader to an Dell Precision 490 box, and I'm having no luck locating factory part numbers for the media card readers or the cable that was used to hook it all up.

I do know the Dell GH483, HX835, and 0R6401 cables do not fit the mother board.

I have visually confirmed the Dell Precision 690 use the same connector on the motherboard but I have been unable to locate part numbers for that system also.

Here is what I have learned. The Dell 490 and Dell 690 have a mother board connector that looks like this.

The "proper" cable looks like this. I put proper in quotes because I'm not sure if this is the correct cable but its currently working for me.

When connected it looks like this.

The connector base is larger than the male connector, but it fits around the pins and is wired correctly.

Part numbers used:

Memory Card Reader : Dell TH661 TEAC CA-200

Cable: Dell WD912

SDHC and SHXC compatibility. Initially after installing the card reader it would not read any of the newer formats and it the firmware of the reader was version 4.0.

Searching google I found a few post saying that I need to update it to 4.08 for compatibility. After making the upgrade I was able to now read the new card formats. I have not tested write speed to the cards.

as part number/s is for a 490 ( the media card reader ) , but it's without the 10 pin flex cable. (it mentions being usb 2.0)

I currently have purchased two TEAC CA-200 (This is the model number of the card reader in the ebay link above) card readers both with different cables. And neither of those have cables that match the mother board.

The connector will have to measure out around 5/8" long and 3/8" thick. Everything I have received has been around 1/2" long and 1/4" thick.

This will probably be a usb 2.0 the Dell Dimension 490 originally came with windows XP on them.

Because I assumed I could pick up a used dell card reader for $10 and have it work off of ebay.  Have it mounted in the 3.5' slot and look nice.   I didn't realize it was going to be this difficult.

Also note that the OLD CA200 and CA400 are SD readers but NOT SDHC or SDXC another reason to NOT use a dell reader. The sabrent reader works fine and is current supporting SDHC and SDXC.

The flex bay 10 pin port is the same across Precision, Optiplex, Inspiron, Dimension, etc. Its a USB 2.0 port. So getting a Dell reader works but there are other readers that fit in 3.5 or 5.25 inch bay that would also work when wired correctly.,

I answered this many years ago and its still true today.

I cannot find ANY list that shows a Flex Bay for the 790/990

I chatted with Dell and they came up with a number G7V21.
