CPU Upgrade no POST - Dell Precision from T7820 Intel Xeon Bronze 3106 to Silver 4210
Hi I'm having trouble with no POST after swapping out the Intel Bronze 3106 to the Silver 4210. Pretty sure the motherboard (O5WJN2) is compatible. But even when I reverted back to the Bronze I couldn't get a POST, even though it was working perfectly before.
I bought the Intel Xeon Silver 4210 from Dell direct, brand new a couple of weeks ago.
Ram used for the Silver 4210 is Cricial 16GB DDR4-2400 UDIMM.
Original Ram used for the Intel Bronze 3106 was DDR4 2666 RDIMM.
Power supply is good and I changed the CMOS battery. But I keep getting the 1 Amber, 3 White blinking.
Appreciate any suggestions as it seems I've stuffed up somewehere.
Thanks

Thanks Mazzinia.
When I searched the Dell site it states the 7820 is compatible with Xeon Silver 4210
https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/intel-xeon-silver-4210-220ghz-10c-20t-96gt-s-1375m-cache-turbo-ht-85w-ddr4-2400/apd/338-bsdg/processors
Also, I guess when I compared both CPU’s it would give me a couple of more options on storage and speed. The rest of the characteristics looked the same. What I wasn’t aware of (nor didn’t think of) was the MB and the possibility of there being different types. I’ll take stock and rethink now.

Hi Mazzinia, I've attached a hi-res photo, so hopefully it's clearer for you to see.
In answer to your question, I updated the bios prior to the upgrade to v2.24 and performed a system backup and image but believe also, it took a certain amount of time (several hours) to slowly fix itself or configure perhaps when sitting at the solid white and a black screen?
Once I was confident the system was stable I applied further updates and the latest bios 2.25.0
Confirming the system is totally stable and yes perhaps a bios reset would have been better.

Hello,
I assume you tried with the old known working ram, correct ?
If putting back the old cpu gets the same issue, I'm worried you may have installed the cpu badly, damaging the socket, maybe

Hi Mazzinia, Thanks for your reply.
Yes I tried the original working ram first.
I checked to pins and capacitors and they looked ok 3.5x eye loupe magnifier. The contacts on the cpu also looked clean.
If you have any further suggestions such as testing the motherboard or cpu that would be appreciated.

You're sure of the right orientation of the cpu, and of not screwing excessively the 6 screws ?

Hi Mazzinia,, thank for the tips.
I'reverted back to the original Bronze 3106 CPU after cleaning the contacts. I inserted just one stick of the original ram and hey presto! Achieved POST successfully and continued to Windows.
So after that success, I updated the bios successfully and it restarted ok. So at Least I know the MB and 1 stick of ram, along with the original CPU are ok.
As I was on a roll, I tried my luck by swapping the CPU to the new Silver 4210 CPU again. It powered itself off after a couple of minutes. So I powered it back on and it has a solid white on the power button but didn't reach the Dell logo stage. Front and back fans are working. Just seems to be in limbo? and not doing anything?
Would you have any further suggestions?
Thanks again

Well, that's it i guess. My own motherboard is a 5WJN2 , and I "think" I researched around 2 years ago if I had an upgrade path towards Gen2. I don't remember finding proof of having any support on this mb revision.
Thus my last sentence wrote in the previous post applies.... go for a Gen1 silver, can be a 4110 , or a better model giving 2 more cores, by example.

Well, firstly ... good to hear that nothing got damaged and you can revert safely. This said at this point i would suggest that probably that motherboard revision is compatible only with Gen1 cpus ( and I've been unable to find anything online about O5WJN2 , i think ). What mad e you sure that it was Gen2 compliant ?
Can you get a refund for the 4210 ? otherwise consider grabbing an used 4110 maybe, and resell the 4210 after all is done

As a foot note, after powering off/on a few times and then leaving it for a few hours the Tower posted through to Windows successfully - to my surprise!
But! After a trying a restart thinking it's now good the system froze with the solid white on the power button again. The only difference is the keyboard has a light on every few seconds this time. I'll leave it for another few hours as there must be still a problem somewhere.......

Now "this" is actually very interesting and I would not dislike at all to be proved wrong.
All these tests are with Secure boot on or off ?

No no no, nothing to apologize about. Actually is a very good news if this motherboard supports Gen2... and if now it's reliably turning on without fusses, it's perfect.
So, you feel upgrading the bios is what helped ? Or is just that after a certain amount of attempts, it slowly fixed itself until able to actually work ?
Maybe a full bios reset is the key to avoid all the troubles, to have a clean slate start ?
(I saw the image but for me is too small to be readable, and if zoomed gets blurry. sorry)

Hi Mazzinia, It was with Secure Boot on please see photo. Since my last post I've been able to add ram and update the bios to the most recent and have restarted a number of times successfully.
There is an error though, I picked up in the pre-boot system check:
PCIe Training error PCI Tag-B300 VendorID-10DE........Link Degraded. So I need to research what this is about.
Apologies it's not my intention to prove anyone wrong, I just want to progress with the new CPU and start adding a 1TB SSD I purchased.

There were several beads of sweat when going through the process. Thanks to your tips and tricks though, as it definately helped.
Yes I'm still gettin the PCIe - Training error. Not had a chance to look at it just yet but it's next on the list before I go any further. See pic
