Replacing failed RAID Controller on MD3220

We have a MD3220 that has a failed RAID controller.  We have acquired a replacement controller, but it has newer firmware than the existing controller.

  • Existing controller has firmware version 07.84.47.60
  • Replacement controller has firmware version 08.20.24.60

From my understanding, once the new controller is installed it should have the configuration and firmware copied over from the existing controller.  Do we need to upgrade the firmware on the existing controller first, or will the copy process downgrade the firmware?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your help.  What we ended up doing was:

  • Powered down the host server
  • Placed the array in simplex mode using the execute script feature from the EMW which cleared the issue with missing RAID controller
  • Updated the firmware on the existing controller to match the replacement
  • Inserted the replacement controller
  • Waited for replacement controller to come ready
  • Set array back to duplex mode
  • Restarted the stack by powering down the MD3220 and enclosures, then starting the enclosures and DAS back up
  • Powered up host after verifying virtual disks and host mappings were correct

Ron T,

The replacement controller should match the current controller, but since the current is above the bridge firmware you are good there. Yet I would emphasize that you really need to upgrade the firmware on both controllers to the latest.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Chris,

We are trying to update the firmware on the existing controller, but the MSDM won't install the firmware because the storage array needs attention.  The Recovery Guru is telling us we need to replace the controller.  Our concern is the controller that died was in Slot 0, will rebooting it cause that issue to clear?

I should also note we have two MD1220 enclosures attached to it.

Ron,

You will need to replace the failed controller, which will then downgrade to match the existing controller. After about 20 minutes or so the downgrade completes , you can then online the controller.
After that then you will need to schedule downtime to upgrade both controllers to the latest firmware version.

Hope this helps clarify.
