REFS and Restore previous versions feature on Windows Server

Hi Folks,

if anyone has some working knowledge with enabling Shadow Copies on an NTFS drive on behalf of a large REFS volume in Windows Server, kindly offer your feedback---good or bad.

I recently purchased a 12-disk Dell PowerVault ME5012 which will hook up to a Dell PE 7515 via a 12GB SAS connector.  My company plans to use it primarily to store raw footage of videos and high-res images on it.  I plan to use linear storage (not pools).  Out of the 12 disks in the ME5012, one will be a hot spare and the rest (11 disks) will be configured as a RAID 6 virtual disk, which will probably get us about 198 TB of capacity.  I plan to format this volume as REFS as Drive F: in Windows.

The server already has a 50TB NTFS disk (Drive D:). I plan to use this disk to manage shadow copies for the above REFS drive (Drive F:) so that I can take advantage of the "Restore previous versions" feature.  Is this possible?  If so, any red flags, warnings, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

-sul.

Hi,

In this particular post, I think it would be best to reach out in Microsoft Tech forum as this might be involving configuration for Windows, which we might not be able to help much. I found this post about having REFS volume but some users have issues on stability concerns, here: https://dell.to/4gWLaoF and https://dell.to/4gBahx3

Unfortunately, I'm not able to help much with Windows configuration. If you would want some opinions in this community, perhaps we would wait for our users here.
