Hello,
at first i would like to say that "Powervault" is some kind of category and contains from Tape, Storage Expansion and SAN Storage a lot of different solutions.
Speaking of disk and when having no more free disk slots within your PowerEdge R730 i see 2 choices
1. A JBOD like MD14x0 together with a H830 RAID Card (comes with external Ports).
2. A SAN like ME4012/24 together with a 12G Dual Port SAS HBA(no raid, just internal Ports and passtrough) It is the ME4 which do the RAID and all other magic
If you use VMware vSphere take a look the HCL first what is supportet and what not. For sure ME4 is supportet.
The MD1400+H830 we have for our Backup Servers which than have multiple MD1400 attached in a chain to a single Perc H830.
Take a look to https://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers?c=us&l=en&s=bsd and click the "external" tab.
Regards,
Joerg

How much space do you need?

About 4 to 8TB.
We are thinking of moving the VM's onto a PowerVault.

i suppose it comes down to what you want to spend
add disks to the R730 if you can, or spend alot more on a disk array.
