PowerVault MD3600f showing up as 1 SAN and not the 2 individual ones we have

We've got 2 PowerVault MD3600f SANs that have previously only been connected to 2 different servers via Fiber only without any of the Ethernet management ports being used.

We want to use the 2 SANs (properly this time) using a Fiber switch to connect to 2 servers we are going to cluster.

I'm new to SANs so I'm clearly missing a step as I cannot see both of the SANs in the Dell PowerVault Modular Disk Storage Manager at the same time, I have to remove one, power it off and then power on the other SAN and then add it to MDSM and it is then shown correctly and I can then right-click on it and manage it.

If I power on both of the SANs at the same time and add them to MDSM (either automatically or manually using their IP addresses of the management ports) then it only lists one of the SANs and if I hover my mouse over the name of the SAN it lists all 4 IP addresses and not just the two that each SAN has.

The first SAN we have is called THISONE and when it's the only SAN powered on it is detected OK:

THISONETHISONE

If I power off THISONE and power on the 2nd SAN (called THATONE) then it also gets detected correctly:

THATONETHATONE

If I power on both THISONE and THATONE I just get one of the SANs listed but it hover the mouse over it all 4 management IP address are listed:

THISONE and THATONETHISONE and THATONE

What do I need to do to get them both to show up in MDSM so I can manage them both?

Hello FazzaGBR,

You can try uninstall and reinstall MDSM and check results

To get the latest MDSM use the resource DVD:

Dell PowerVault MD32/MD34/MD36/MD38 Series Resource DVD

https://dell.to/3NB1NuJ

  • Download MDSM
  • Verify it completed download
  • extract ISO to local storage where it will be running
  • Uninstall MDSM
  • Reboot
  • Install new MDSM
  • if installing on system that connect to the storage for data,
    • Reboot host
  • Test MDSM

Do you know if someone copied the config off of 1 unit and applied it to the other which sets the controllers up as the same system ID?

Give this a try:  Add one to MDSM, run logs, remove it, add other, run logs, and then compare "Storage array world-wide identifier (ID)" in the storagearrayprofile.txt file of each.

If they are matching  then the only way to fix is to do a factory wipe which would require call in to Support and set up a case.

Hello FazzaGBR

Unfortunately there is not a way to manually change the ID. That is done by the controller when you do a factory reset.

You would need to contact Support directly, there is not a way to do this on the forum.

Hi!  Thanks for the reply.  I have reinstalled the MDSM following your steps above but that has not solved the issue.  Both units still can be added individually but when you try and add both it still thinks it is one unit.

No idea if someone copied the config off of 1 unit and applied it to the other or not - do you know if it is possible to edit an exported config in a text editor or something and change the ID that way and then import it in to a unit to set it to a different ID that way?

In your last paragraph you say to "run logs" what exactly do you mean, is there a report to run or are you asking me to export a log from somewhere?

Thanks!

I've found the Storage Array Profile report on the Monitor > Reports menu and I can confirm that the Storage Array World Wide Identifier IDs are indeed exactly the same

Hi, I'm not 100% sure but might change the enclosure ID helpful. The enclosure default ID is 0, so you can change it to 1 or any other number. Hardware>change>ID

I spotted that setting the other day and have set the Enlosure ID of THISONE to 7 and THATONE to 8 but the same thing happens so it must bet the Storage Array World World ID's being the same that is the issue so need to find a solution to that.

I was hoping that if I exported the config of one of the SANs I could then edit the cfg file and change the WWI to something else, but unless I'm exporting the wrong thing when I open up the cfg file there is no mention of the Storage Array World Wide Identifier so nothing to change.
