MD3600F - How to replace redundant RAID controller with another containing a newer version FW

Hi All,

as per the subject, I have to replace one of the two RAID controllers on a MD3600F FW version 07.84.53.60 with another spare that I have had in stock for a few years and of which I do not know the installed firmware version. I know that in the case of installing a ctrl with an older version, the active ctrl automatically aligns the fw of the ctrl just inserted to its version, I have no idea how the system behaves by adding a ctrl with a newer version such as 08.20.24.60. I would like to prevent the system from overwriting the currently working FW to avoid compatibility problems with the connected servers.
Is it possible to disable the automatic firmware update?
I thank in advance those who want to help me.
Regards

Giuspet_90518a,

To start, there isn't a way to disable the automatic firmware update, but if you install the controller then it will try to downgrade the new controller to match the working controller. However, that doesn't mean that it will downgrade that far back correctly and won't have any errors that come up,. The reason being is that the system can have a tough time getting it to work using that old of a firmware version. Really it comes down to the best option is to upgrade the environment to use the latest firmware.

Let me know if this helps.

If I understand your question correctly, yes the previous controller, if installed with the other controller at a similar firmware level, would still work but the large difference between the online controller and the other controller with the newer firmware was likely too great.

Also, with the storage working, you may want to take the time to get both controllers up to current, which would alleviate the issue altogether.

@DELL-Chris H

Hello Chris,

 I have done the swap of the controllers without any issue and the storage is working fine, surely because the FW owned was older or the same of the running one. Anyway I have a question about the probably issue in the case of a newer FW on the spare CTRL: although the online CTRL has the previous version of FW it is working well I belive that the new CTRL with the same FW also have to work fine. What do you think about?

Note that the active FW is 07.84.53.60 and on support portal there are only two next versions: 08.20.21.61 and 08.20.24.60, A18  without any bridge version.

Anyway thanks a lot for your precious support.

Regards
