MD3000 replacement drive after warranty has expired?

We have an MD3000 which is over 5 years old, but still works fine.  However, I recently suffered a failed 1TB SATA drive.  If I can locate a Dell certified drive, does it matter if the firmware is identical?  For example, see attached image of the failed drive.  Even though it was shipped with MA07, the array shows that it's now running MA0D.  If I buy the exact same drive listed with firmware MA08, will it work?  or, how can I upgrade the firmware to MA0D before I replace the failed drive?

Thanks!

Hello dkraut,

As long as the replacement drive is a dell certified drive the drive should be seen by the MD3000. Now once the drive is seen by the MD3000 then you can upgrade the firmware on the drive so that it matches the other drives. Here is a link to the hard drive firmware for you MD3000. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=R291590&fileId=2731115770&osCode=WNET&productCode=powervault-md3000&languageCode=EN&categoryId=FW

Sam, assuming all other SATA drives are at MA0D and I replace the failed drive which currently has MA08, it's going to start rebuilding.  Is it safe/possible to update only that specific drive and can it be done during normal operation?  What are the ramifications if I leave it at MA08?

Hello dkraut,

You can leave the firmware of the replacement drive as it should start the rebuild without any issue.  What you will need to so is to arrange for an outage so that you can upgrade the rest of the drives to the latest firmware as all firmware needs to be updated with all I/O stopped otherwise you run the risk of having data corruption.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Sam, I replaced the drive this morning and all seemed ok, the MDSM said copyback in progress for a few hours but then I received a Physical Disk by-passed error?  Now the drive is showing Failed.  I suppose it's possible that the drive I purchased was on the edge of failure and I happen to have another, but before I drive back to the data center, I wanted to see if there was anything else I could check remotely?  Thanks!  Dave

Hello Dave,

There is not much that can be done remotely to check that error as if the drive is showing as failed except the support bundle to see if the drive is showing as online there or what code it gives for the drive to see if it has failed or just fallen offline.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Roger that.. from what I can tell, the drive died.  I see drive spun down, physical disk failure, destination driver error, etc. in the final moments of logs.... I'll plan to try again tomorrow with another drive.

Bad drive Sam.  I replaced it today with another and this one finished copyback and I'm now back to Optimal.  I ran Seagate SeaTools on the one that failed and although it spins up, it fails when tested.  Thanks for the help!

Hello Dave,

I am glad that you were able to get your Mdback to optimal state after the drive was replaced.
