Expanding a 12GB SAS PowerVault MD3420
Hi all,
I have a MD3420 24x 2.5" with 2x 12GB SAS controllers that we're looking to add an expansion array. From what I can see the correct model is the MD1200, but it seems that model is only a 6GB SAS.
Could someone kindly advise which is the correct 12GB SAS expansion array we should consider.
Thank you!

Hello,
The only supported expansion enclosures for the MD3420 are the MD1200 (3.5" drive bays) or MD1220 (2.5" drive bays).

You could use a SAS cable that has the 6G connector at one end and 12G connector at the other to connect MD3420 to the MD12xx.
Cable PN#'s you could use:
1502C - ASSY,CBL,SAS,HD2MINI,EXT,3M - Assembly Cable, External HD2Mini, SAS, 3 Meter
5J89T - ASSY,CBL,SAS,HD2MINI,EXT,0.5M - Assembly, Cable, SAS, HD2MINI, EXT, 0.5M
YJXMR - ASSY,CBL,SAS,HD2MINI,EXT,2M - 2 Meter, External HD2Mini SAS Cable for 6G SAS Low Profile
You cannot put a 12GB SAS EMM in a MD12xx.
I would also note that expansion units for MD3420 are no longer sold by Dell.

@DELL-Charles R so the MD1400 won't work?
Thanks Charles.

Hi,
Unfortunately no, MD1400 cannot be used as expansion for MD3420. Ref: https://dell.to/3X6gI4y
