PowerPath and direct-attach connections
hi there
I have a Clariion CX3-10c, I would like to connect directly a host with 2 hba's to the storage. Atm we don't have a switch (we plan to buy it later), i'm wondering if it's possible to connect directly the HBA1 of my server on StorageProcessor A and the HBA2 on StorageProcessor B and then manage the availability via PowerPath. I just want to know if this could be a supported solution.
Thanks !

The Knowledgebase search is having a quicklink on your Powerlink Home page most likely - if not negotiate as follows to go to Knowledgebase search -
Home > Support > Knowledgebase Search.
Hope this helps. Anyway for your easy reference, I am attaching the emc171918 solution here -
ID: emc171918
Solution Class: 3.X Compatibility
Goal How to add a host directly attached to a CLARiiON array into a SAN environment
Fact Product: CLARiiON CX-series
Fact Product: CLARiiON CX3-series
Change Environment changed from direct attach/direct connect to SAN
Fix
Host must first be removed from its Storage Group(s) and deregistered from the CLARiiON array:
Remove all fiber cable(s) connecting the host server to the CLARiiON array.
Remove host from Storage Group. See solution emc14239 ("How to connect or disconnect servers from Storage Groups using Navisphere Manager").
Deregister host. See solution emc101519 .
Add host to SAN environment:
Configure Fibre Channel (FC) switch. Refer to switch configuration guide for specific details on configuration switch IP address, password, ports, etc.
Attach hosts to Fibre Channel switch port.
Attach CLARiiON to Fibre Channel switch port.
Add HBA WWN and CLARiiON storage processor (SP) WWN to switch zone.
Verify host HBA/initiator is visible from Navisphere Connectivity Status. Refer to solution emc35436 for more information.
Register host with CLARiiON array.
Add host and LUNs to CLARiiON Storage Group.
Thanks,
Sandip

Searching the ESM it looks like that the "only" supported topologies are FC-AL and FC-SW .. I searched windows and hp-ux hosts but I think that the previous statement is true for almost every other platform.. AFAIK Direct attach is a subset of FC-AL (you simply skip the hubs). And there are primus solutions explaining how to migrate a direct-connected host to a switch with a CX3 .. Have a look at primus emc171918 for details.
Powerpath will work, as long as the underlying configuration is supported. And it looks it's supported

Actually i'm going mad trying to get this config to work with RHEL5, but at least now I know that's a software issue

Unfortunatly I know even less about clariions .. I think that dropping a new thread in the Clariion area of the forum and ask for some help may be a better choice

Stefano - extremely sorry to jump into this thread - hope you didn't mind. I am not a regular visitor to this Forum but while exploring it yesterday I saw this not answered for a while and it was easy for me to answer
Cheers everyone....
