Qlogic/Broadcom 57800 Firmware update failure
I need some help with one of my Dell R720 servers. I was doing some firmware updates on my servers using iDRAC and on one of them the network firmware update failed. When I boot the system it show it is trying to bootstrap the card and then prints out:
Embedded NIC1 :OS NIC=DISABLED, Management Shared NIC=ENABLED
Embedded NIC2 :OS NIC=DISABLED, Management Shared NIC=ENABLED
...
I have tried updating the firmware again through iDRAC and it says the firmware does not apply, same thing in Life Cycle Controller. I downloaded the Dell SUU and it does not find the card when it does an inventory. I have downloaded the firmware update for Linux and tried to install it under RHEL it tells me "This Update Package is not compatible with your system configuration". Running an lspci in linux does not show the card at all. I do not know what to do to resolve this issue.
If anyone knows a way to bring this card back to life I would be much appreciative of it. The card is a:
430-4428 : Broadcom 57800 2x10Gb DA/SFP+ + 2x1Gb BT Network Daughter Card

The only solution to this issue is to replace the card. Dell did so and the server booted up fine and the new card started talking with no intervention.

Hi,
What is the firmware package that you are trying to install? What version of RHEL are you using? Have you tried to reseat the daughtercard?

I downloaded Network_Firmware_PX6V4_LN_7.12.17.BIN from www.dell.com/.../DriversDetails
The version of RHEL installed is Workstation 6.5. I did take the daughtercard out twice and reseated it see if it would address the issue.

It happened to another server. I was in the iDRAC interface, uploaded the exe version of Network_Firmware_PX6V4_LN_7.12.17, told the iDRAC to install and reboot. When it finished I could still see the network card but for some reason it though both the 10G interfaces were 1G and inside of VMware it said that it could not detect a compatible network adapter. Tried different configuration options for the network card inside of hardware setup and nothing worked. Once the server was hard reset by removing the power it had the same symptoms as the other server that failed.
The update went fine on the first 2 servers in my inventory and failed on the next 2. We have 3 more servers but I am not going to touch those until I have some kind of resolution.

Josh,
Have you been able to look into this issue?

It looks like the way to resolve is is to install the older 7.8 firmware and then install the new firmware from within an OS rather than through the iDRAC.

Were you updating from the OS or the lifecycle controller?

Thanks, but it did not work. It tells me:
Collecting inventory...
..
Running validation...
This Update Package is not compatible with your system configuration.

That was inside of a RHEL 6 system.

Can you try from the lifecycle controller? Sometimes that will allow it to flash when the OS update won't.

Josh,
I have tried doing the update again from the lifecycle controller and it gives me the message that this update does not apply to your system. I have also tried to go and do a firmware rollback and it does not show the network card in the list of firmwares to rollback. Im at a loss of what to do next.

What was the resolution on this, if any? Just had this happen to a handful of R620's...

Josh,
Sorry, I never saw this message. I did swap the daughter boards and the ones that worked, would work in the new system, and the ones that didn't would not work in the old systems.

No, we never did resolve this. I probably spent a couple days of work off and on over the course of a couple weeks trying to resolve this with Josh here on the forums. My boss finally said it was cheaper to purchase new 10G Intel cards then spending more time on this since we didn't have support on the servers anymore. I would have love to have figured it out as I was not running iDRAC on the dedicated ports on my servers but now have to for the systems where the firmware failed to update.
