Installing iDRAC

Hi There,

in a remote LAN they provided us a DELL machine (PowerEdge R740). I can login to the vpn of the LAN of that place and visit the ESXi Gui via an internal. Now I'd like to install the iDRAC.
On page 15 of this manual:
https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r740_owners-manual_de-de.pdf
you see the back plane of the server. It is written in German but as you can see the ports are numbered. Number 11 points to the iDRAC port (Explaination on page 16). So asked the IT - administration to plugin in a second cable to that iDRAC port and route an IP to that machine.

My expectation would that I wouls see the iDRAC gui by visiting the that ip. Is that right ? Is it possible to see the MAC-Address of that port  in the ESXi Gui in order to be able route the IP ? Or do I have to go a different way  ? Of course I want to monitor the hardware from abroad.

Thanks!

As far as the svc tag goes you can use ESXCLI and use the following command to retrieve it
/sbin/esxcli hardware platform get

or, if you are using OpenManage, you can use
$racadm license view

to view the iDrac license itself, as seen here.

Regarding the MAC address I believe that you will need to use the virtual mac, since that's what the server would think is it's 'real' MAC address, while the switch and the virtual switch in the hypervisor should only see the real MACs.

Let me know if this helps.

Hansherrmann,

That would greatly depend on the iDrac license you have, since the port you are referring to is the iDrac Enterprise Dedicated port, it would require an Enterprise license to use. If you have the iDrac Express license you would have access to using that port. There is a document here that may assist with configuring the iDrac. As far as the question regarding the MAC address, you will want to look at the document here on the best ways to get those details.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Chris,

best thanks  for your targeted help !

...never knew about localcli - command

I got no idea of the iDRAC license. ...Sorry can you say how I can find out the DELL service tag ? I don't have physical access. I can only reach the server via Linux shell or VMware gui.

There is another question, which is not directly related .... hope yo don't mind

I created a virtual server (=vm) on that DELL machine. I want to connect it to the net. The DELL machine is in the LAN of a university. That university has public IPs. On other DELL servers they have virtual servers (=vm) reachable via their public ips configured as static ip. In that vm I installed a Debian in order to have root server. On that root server I want to host a website for the web with a domain and a static ip.

Now I have basicly 2 types of MAC Address

1.) MAC Address of the Physical NIC (of the DELL Hardware)

you can see this MAC Address in the configuration of the vmnic0 in ESXi / Vnware gui

2.) MAC Address generated by the os of the virtual server

E.g. if Debian is installed you can list the network interfaces by the shell command

   # ip address

From here you can see the generated MAC Address.

So what MAC Address is needed in order to route above mentioned ip to the server. From my understand it needs to be an ip on the root server (2.)). Correct ?

Anyway it does not connect...

Best,

Hans Herrmann

Hi Chris,

is it possible to enable the dedicated iDRAC network card and configure a different ip from remote via ssh say for instance with the esxcli comand?

Best,

Hans Herrmann

You should be able to if you can connect via the iDracs default ip (192.168. 0.120) or to the IP you assigned if you have, or if you had OpenManage installed.
