Dell R740 Broken disk replaced but still not assigned to a virtual disk
Hello,
I replace on a Dell R740 with H740P mini a broken disk, already assigned as global spare but still not rebuilding neither being assigned to an existent VD.
Can you please let me know what i'm doing wrong in here?
Many thanks for your support.

Good morning,
we have analyzed the logs.
We found that in the logs there are many errors related to drive 1 and drive 8.
I also see that only hdd12 is seen in VD0. Do you know what drives the RAID1 named VD0 was originally formed with?
My advice is as follows:
- Perform a restart of the server, after making a backup of the VD0 volume.
- Try recreating VD0 with the two source disks (hdd 12 and the other x) and see if the volume is seen again. This operation is named "retag"
Thank you

Joaolima91,
Would you confirm a few things for me?
What is the raid level of the Virtual Disk? I ask as I am just trying to confirm it isn't a Raid 0, which wouldn't support rebuilding.
Do you have multiple Virtual Disks, or just the one in question?
Lastly, what is the size/speed of the replacement disk, and what is the size/speed of the original drives in the Virtual Disk? I ask this as the replacement drive must be the same, or larger/faster than the original drives, they can't be smaller or slower.
Let me know and we can go from there.

Hello Chris,
Here it goes:
What is the raid level of the Virtual Disk? I ask as I am just trying to confirm it isn't a Raid 0, which wouldn't support rebuilding.
Was VD with 2 disks in RAID1.
Do you have multiple Virtual Disks, or just the one in question?
Multiple Virtual Disks - 8
Lastly, what is the size/speed of the replacement disk, and what is the size/speed of the original drives in the Virtual Disk? I ask this as the replacement drive must be the same, or larger/faster than the original drives, they can't be smaller or slower.
Server had 18 disks with the same size/speed.
Speed: 12Gbps
Size: 7451.5 GB
Thanks

Thank you. Are you seeing any errors in the logs?
Also, would you share screenshots of the raid controller bios on the Virtual Disks page, as well as the Physical Disks page?

Would you confirm if the server is up to date, as the other process and details look to be corrrect.

Hello Chris,
I've now updated the server with the latest available versions using Dell Open Manage.
The system health is still showing a warning and the RAID for the replaced disks isn't rebuilding automatically.
Thanks

Hello,
I see that the hard disk 9 is in foreign state.
Do you have the option to clear foreign configuration?

Hello Marco,
Yes, i've the option and already cleared the foreign configuration for disk 9.
Should the rebuild start automatically?
Thanks.

It should. but would you clarify how you are viewing the server, are you in front of it or remote, are you using OpenManage?
I ask as you may need to close and reopen OpenManage to see if.
What we can try is going to the hotspare on the Physical Disk page, then delete it as a Hotspare and then re-add it again, and if that doesn't work you can try removing it as global and try specific to the VD in question.

Hello Chris,
I'm accessing remotely by iDRAC. I've OpenManage but i only use to manage for updates.
I already tried the first option to delete as hotspare and add it again, didn't worked.
On the VD i don't have the option to assign any physical disk on VD01, only on the others VD i've the option to assign a disk.
VD01:

VD02:

Thanks

That is a weird behaviour.
Can you try to remove all hot spare, then add only one?
If it doesn't work, did you try to restart the server, after having perform a backup?

Hello Marco,
I removed all the spare disks from hot spare and left only one but still not appearing any option on VD01 to add a physical disk.
Any idea?
Thanks.

Would you run a TSR (Technical Support Report) on the server, as described here. Once complete will you upload the TSR to your Serivce Request, as laid out here.
I will private message you the SR# you will need to use to upload.
