PowerEdge T620 won't POST due to initialisation error.

I've recently gotten a second hand PowerEdge T620 however the server won't POST because "IDRAC is not responding".

I've tried draining any flea power in the system and resetting the IDRAC by pressing the "i" button on the back of the server for 30 seconds.

I can't get into the f2 menu because it won't POST so I don't know what else to do.

I've not had any success so far.

Hello,

It sounds like you are seeing an iDRAC initialization error. I'll outline a few troubleshooting steps and in the order you can try. Some you have already tried. Just see if you used the same steps for each:

*drain flea power (shut down, disconnect power cables and Network cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed).

After flea power drain, system has to set for 3 minutes for DRAC to reset without any power plugged in,

Then plug in NIC and power but wait 2 minutes before power on to give DRAC time to initialize.

Check if it boots with no error?

*Clear NVRAM - there is a map under the lid to show the jumper location. Shut down, Set jumper to the Clear position, power on and Post up to the jumper error, shut down and return jumper to original location.

Check if it boots with no error?

*Reset DRAC to defaults -

Boot to < F2 > iDRAC Settings > Reset iDRAC configurations to defaults if possible.

Then Reconfigure DRAC -

Boot to F2 > iDRAC Settings > Network.

Configure IP, Subnet and Gateway and port you use

Check if it boots with no error?

To rule out anything else you can try a Minimum to POST configuration.

The minimum components to allow the PowerEdge T620 to complete POST are:

*System Board

*CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)

*Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1

*Control Panel with cable (to power system on)

*PSU (and for redundant PSU also the PDB/PIB)

Remove anything not on that list: DVD, Hard drives, PERC controller, backplane, network card, NIC cable, any pcie cards, keyboard, mouse, USB devices, …. anything not on the list remove.

You can leave a monitor connected to view progress.

If it does not post then the issue is with one of those components.

If you get successful POST, put things back a little at a time until you find the faulting component.

The DRAC is integrated to the system board, so if it is failed and those steps do not help, it would need a system board replacement.
