how long should it take to add physical drives to a RAID-10 virtual disk in a R350/H355 server anyways? :)

So i have an R350 server with a PERC H355 controller.

It has had a RAID-10 virtual disk with 6 disks for a long time now, working fine.

The server has 8 slots, and i recently inserted 2 more (identical) disks.

In iDRAC i clicked my way to the virtual disk and chose "edit disk capacity".

There i could add the 2 new disks. Seemed fine. The operation seemed to complete with no errors.

But then nothing has happened. Its been over 24 hours now.

The virtual disk still seems to be the same capacity as it was before.

When i choose "view physical disks" on the virtual disk, it only displays those 6 first disks.

And i can not create another (new) virtual disk with the 2 new disks (which i think i could have before i tried adding them to the existing vdisk).

And the action to "edit disk capacity" on the vDisk has disappeared (since those 2 new disks arent available anymore it seems, even though they havent really appeared as "joined" to the vDisk, yet?).

I can see all 8 disks in iDRAC/LCC just fine though.

So whats going on? Is it still chewing away add "adding" them?

(there are no uncompleted tasks in the job queue)

Or do i need to do something more?

Or did something go wrong?

I kinda assumed that it would take a "while" (minutes, or a handful hours) and the vDisk would have grown (without being destroyed).

And yes, i do have backups, no worries there:)

Hello, Alexander-36725

I dug up some old post for your peace of mind. :)

It is normal that it takes time.

Thanks @DELL-Young E

I read through it now, and that guide basically just seems to say what i did (?)...

to just "add the disks", and that should be it.

Anyway, i tried the racadm CLI now, and that gave some more info.

First i compared the outputs of "racadm raid get pdisks -o" for disk 5 (already in the RAID) and disk 7 (one of the newly added disks).

Ok... wasnt quite sure what this really meant. Kinda looks like disk 7 is "added but not used".

Still didnt know how to fix that.

But then i did this... (ahaa, still just done 46% of "reconstruct"... after like 4 days... )
So lets see if this will be completed in yet anothet 4-5 days:)

racadm>>racadm raid get vdisks -o
Disk.Virtual.0:RAID.Integrated.1-1

Its at 61% now (after 5 days)... i'll see what happens when it reaches 100% at the end of the week:)

Perhaps its simply that the H355 is much slower than for instance H7xx (?)

But yeah, a full week for this was more than i expected:)

Perhaps its also a factor that the disks here are heavily utilized a large portion of the day?

(i am adding these disks "live")

Yes this could be the reason

@DELL-Young E Thanks! :)

And yes, to sum it up, it took a week - but completed without hassle! :)

So now the vdisk is a bit bigger, and a bit faster too:)

Jobs that on average previously took 14.5h now complete in 13h.

All good, thanks!
