Dell Inspiron 1525 wireless network adapter
I bought my Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit quite a while ago. I had a problem with it, and an incompetent "technician" erased (!!!) Vista and installed XP. Now I finally got around to re-installing Vista, and all is good, but I don't seem to be able to breath life in the wireless network adapter. Actually, applications and drivers that I downloaded don't even seem to see the wireless adapter, as if the hardware was not there. I am really desperate as it is a vital function that I badly need, and my initial happiness about getting Vista finally reinstalled has now turned into frustration, as the wireless DID work with XP! Any help, please? I tried downloading all I could find from Dell, but nothing seems to work.

Do you see an unknown network controller in Device Manager (right-click My Computer, Manage)? If so, what is the DEV and VEN ID's for it (right-click, Properties, Details tab, Hardware Ids from dropdown menu)?

yes sir that is exactly the case, except that the device marked with an ! is not found under "network adapters", but under "other devices", listed as "network controller". this will be the wireless adapter though, since under "network adapters" there is no wireless adapter. under "network adapters", there is no problematic device. here is the information you asked for:
PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&SUBSYS_000B1028&REV_01
PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&SUBSYS_000B1028
PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&CC_028000
PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4315&CC_0280

This "should" be the driver you need:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=TDC0F&fileId=3237516222&osCode=WLH&productCode=inspiron-1525&languageCode=EN&categoryId=NI
Download and run to extract the files, then run C:\Dell\Drivers\TDC0F\setup.exe to install if it does not start automatically.

thanks for your help. i had already found and tried that link (and some others) on the dell website, and as i wrote in my initial post, none of them worked. however, your question about the hardware ID's gave me an idea, and i googled "VEN_14E4&DEV_4315" which eventually landed me on a page on wikidrivers, from where i went on to a page on mediafire (rather shady, but i was desperate), where i eventually managed to download the required drivers, so now, after a few days' headache, all is good, and the built-in wireless adapter works! finally. can't believe it, to be honest, but as i am using it right now, it looks good. cheers!

There is NO way anyone could know which ones you tried. 9/10 times people get the WRONG driver, so we ALWAYS start at the beginning if adequate information is not provided.
You shouldn't have given up so easily and turned to a "driver site". You should never use them. There was some confusion based on the VEN/DEV ID's whether or not that was the right one. There were other options I would have given you had you returned here with the results first. Anyway, I guess you have it resolved to your satisfaction. Take care.

The Dell Wireless 1395 card. For Windows Vista it should be this driver:
