Switch Dell S6000 Boot OS Failure & Black Screen After Copy/Replace Grub in EFI Shell
Hi Dell Technician,
I have a serious incident when upgrade OS Switch Dell S6000.
This is not platform Open Networking (ON), Just S6000; so there is no ONIE interface. I only see the BIOS interface (when press F2) and BLI Mode (when press ESC)
First I upgrade OS from 9.10.0.1P3 to 9.14.2.8, during the upgrade process, I saw it hang in than 3-4 hours. Therefore, I was forced to turn off and turn on the power.
After that, the Switch show "Detecting harware...netbsd_bde_create() failed", it still loading OS 9.10 but stuck at "Starting ... OS" more than 1 day.
I tried to find a way to reset factory in BIOS and BLI Mode but only saw instructions for reinstalling OS via TFTP: boot change primary => tfpt => OS bin => Host IP => nvram erase => reload.
I tried it but still no hope, the switch still announced "Detecting Hardware Failed", loaded OS via TFTP ok but still stuck in starting OS.
Next I try to boot into EFI Shell.
shell>fs0:
In the Disk "fs0:" I see there are two folders: "grub" and "grub_old", continue to check the date and time of files in these two folders.
The files in the "grub" folder have the same time when upgrade switch error, while the files in "grub_old" are from 2012. So, I think that if we switch these two folders together, it would be possible to solve it, but it was wrong.
Copy "grub_old" into "grub" makes the switch constantly restart, unable to load the GRUB interface. After rollback copy folder, the switch is now stuck with a black screen, can not load Grub Interface anymore.
I tried to search for rescue Grub in EFI Shell and found the recommendation to try "attrib -a grub" to remove the "A - Archive" type.
attrib:D grub
attrib:D grub_old
After editing and reboot still could not be resolved, currently the switch just loaded black screen and stuck in there.
Is there any way to recover these problems?
Thanks

Hi @tera368,
Thanks for the tag, but I have to remove it as it's your private info in a public view. The process of reviving is not documented and unable to provide you through this forum reply. I strongly suggest to call into technical support to engage the network engineer to remote in and try to reinstall the switch kernel.

Hi, thanks for choosing Dell. Could you please send your service tag though DM? If the product is still in warranty I'd say call in and get direct support -despite being old- S6000 is high range switch model. There are some commands to be executed but it seems to be quite difficult done by an end user. You shouldn't have powered off the switch, it is not recommended.
