S4148T Fan modules faults
Hello,
Few days after installing a new S4148T switch we noticed that its fans were producing more noise than the other ones already installed. Despite that, the switch was working fine and no alarm was presented. At this moment we thought the noise could be being caused by the highers temperatures we've been experiencing in the last few week.
A couple more days later the noise being produced by the fans got even higher, but this time the switch also present events indicating that all 4 fans modules weren't working correctly (EQM_FAN_FAULT_MAJOR). Curiously, no temperature threshold alarm was presented.
Following the instructions on the OS10 System Log Message Reference, I removed and reinstalled all fan modules. Almost immediately, the noise level had been reduced and also events cleared, but few days later, the events were triggered again.
Having others s4148T switches still not installed, I decided to swap all fan modules and since then, the switch have not presented any alarm. It also have reduced considerably the noise level.
The replaced fan modules where installed on a test (spare) switch and have been working without any fault since then. The only different thing I notice is that 'show system' command shows that the fans on the test switch were spinning at ~1K RPM higher speeds than the ones installed on the production one, even with the test switch being located on a colder room.
The production and test switch have been update and have the same OS10 (10.6.01), CPLD (1.3) and Bios (3.33.0.1-11) versions.
Can those fan modules be considered really faulty or this behavior can be caused by another problem?
Best regards

Hello,
We have seen “cosmetic” fan issues in the past, and also fan noise that is not service impacting or considered a hardware problem/“faulty”. We do not see existing reports about fan issues in 10.6.0.1 by other users.
Fan issues have to do with the low-level firmware, rather than OS10 level like 10.6.0.1.
So when you put the service tag for the switch on Dell Support page, you can make sure that the correct firmware package (Dell Networking Firmware Updater) is installed on the switch, because there are small differences depending on the specific switch.
Also since it is a new switch, you may have entitlement to have Dell support investigate the issue. If you do not have support entitlement, you can just monitor, if there is no service impact, the issue is most likely cosmetic.
