Dell x1000 series switch: cannot change management VLAN

I have multiple VLAN (VLAN1, VLAN10, VLAN20) at the office, and the pfSense DHCP server runs on VLAN10, it appears Dell x1000 series only allows VLAN1 as management VLAN, so as soon as I set the incoming packet as tagged with VLAN10 as mgmt VLAN, I lost the access to the switch, I cannot manage the switch UI/CLI, nor can I ping the ip that was assigned if I uses untagged.

Steps to recreate

  1. on the parent switch, set the port connecting to X1000 as untagged VLAN10
  2. connect x1000, x1000 receives an IP from pfsense DHCP successfully 10.0.10.147, I can set up the x1000 to add VLAN1, VLAN10, VLAN20, then change the uplinking port to trunk to accept these VLANs
  3. back to the parent switch, set the port connecting to X1000 as tagged, now I cannot ping 10.0.10.147 any more.

Is there anyway that I can set up the x1000 to use VLAN10 as mgmt VLAN?

Sherwoody,

From what I am seeing i don't see a way to change it as a setting, so you may want to try general mode and also make sure that the ip address is in the right subnet for vlan 10.  On a side note the X1000 is more of a value switch, so it doesn't have all the functionality/cli of other switches.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi @sherwoody,

You should be able to use other VLAN than VLAN1 as management VLAN.

Thank you Joey for sending the link - it appears the doc only contains info about the command line option for EMC Powerswitch, most of the commands do not work on X1000 switch, can you suggest relevant config steps to set up management VLAN on X1000?

Also tried this from the GUI,

- go to "IPV4 Addressing",

- "Add" a new line that uses VLAN 10 and select DHCP (this would replace the original one using VLAN 1).

- Back to VLAN port setting, set the trunk port to take all future port, and setPVID=10.

but as soon as I change the upstreaming switch port to tagged at the parent switch, the dell x1000 web UI is no longer accessible...

is the mgmt VLAN setting only changeable using CLI?

Thank you Kris, the "General" mode did the trick!

it appears the "Trunk" mode for the port VLAN setting (enter from VLAN link on dashboard) incorrectly set VLAN (PVID ID) as untagged, and all others as "tagged" and the tag/untag option is grayed out, so user is stuck if "Trunk" mode is used.

The general mode does allow user set everything as "tagged", and once I did that, things work very well.
