Upgrade path for NetWorker 8.2.1.6

Good afternoon, I just started a new position as one of the backup / restore admins and we are using an older version of NetWorker 8.2.1.6 and would like to get it updated.  I'm working on a project plan to migrate it over the next year to 9, but don't want to destroy things.

I have researched for the last couple of days on upgrading but not from our version to say the latest version of 8.2.3.x. I see there are patches for version 8.2.1.8 and then SP2 and SP3.  Never having to update or upgrade NetWorker, I'm at a loss here and not seeing a true roadmap on the best way to do it, I would really appreciate your assistance in helping me work this out.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Lee

SP2 is 8.2.2.0.  8.2.2.1 contains SP2 and patches on top of then and so on...  So, you see 8.2.2.1 as 8.2SP2p1.  Last patch for 8.2SP2 is 8.2SP2p6 which translates to 8.2.2.6.  Because normally SP2 went our around 8.2.1.8 it did not contain all patches as when you create SP you have to freeze the tree, but usually this does catshup by p2 or p3.  This is why I never apply version which is not at least p4.

Since a while, NW uses a 4-digit version number consisting of:

  major_version.minor_version.patch_version.hotfix_version

And because the 4th digit was not available for older version, there is also a build number.

Each release has a 4-digit number even if it is not listed. For example:

NW 8.2    = NW 8.2.0.0    '0' versions are also called 'release versions'

  NW 8.2.1 = NW 8.2.1.0

For easy downloads, release versions are also available from the FTP server:

  ftp.legato.com/pub/eval/yyyyQ#

You must open each directory to find the appropriate NW release.

Hotfix releases for current versions are usually released monthly. You can get them also via FTP:

  ftp.legato.com/pub/NetWorker/Cumulative_Hotfixes

Bingo,

Thank you for the quick reply.  Also thank you for the links.  Now, my question is still should I upgrade to 8.2.1.8 or go ahead and go with SP2?  I've seen rationale for going step by step as well as jumping to the Service Packs with no delineation of exactly what is the best way to proceed.  I've also read that the hot fixes are not necessarily included in the service packs, so it would make sense to me to install each hot fix and then install the service packs.  Is this a correct line of thinking in your mind?

Sincerely,

Lee

hotfixes are post SP patches, but these are full packages so if you go to SP2 then install 8.2.2.6 (and not 8.2.2.0 and then 8.2.2.6).  8.2.2.6 is very stable release and you won't make mistake with it.

There is no problem to even update to 8.2.3.x or 8.2.4.. However, if I have the choice, I personally would stay with NW 8.2.2.

Hrvoje,

Thank you for your reply.  So, you say that hot fixes and SPs are all full packages, so it would make sense that if I go to SP2 that will include any updates in 8.2.1.8 and if I then go to 8.2.2.6 it contains the same updates as 8.2.2.1, 8.2.2.2, 8.2.2.3, etc?  I just want to make sure my line of thinking is correct.

I did read somewhere that there are patches in 8.2.1.8 that are not included in SP2, is this correct?  If so, it makes me want to upgrade by patch set and the service pack to ensure I get all the updates.

Sincerely,

Lee

Bingo,

Again, thank you for your response.  Did you have issues with SP3 & SP4?

My personal take on this is:

- SP4 is just too fresh so I doubt many people tested it yet

- with SP3 I noticed that if you use module which is SP3 then you will get some annoying jobdb messages by savegrp (it doesn't matter which version your server is).  I received the patch, but I still need to test it.

- one one SP3 server I noticed that cloning session sometimes doesn't finish (actually, it is staging from AFTD to tape).  In envs where I use ddboost (and no tape), I didn't see any issues related to nsrclone yet

I did not have any severe issues but I got the impression that the new SQLite media index sometimes responds to fast under some conditions.

For example, deleting a bunch of obsolete save sets from a DD volume created some funny 'media db nor ready' messages. when running a scripted job. After adding a 1s delay after each deletion process everything worked flawless.

Hrvoje,

Again, thank you for all your insight especially with your personal take on the SPs.  And thank you for the clarification on the patch sets and what they mean.

Have a wonderful week!

Sincerely,

Lee
