CIF copy from DataDomain to tape with Networker?

Networker 8214

Windows Server 2012r2 (NMC, Nodes, server)

DataDomain DD7200 OS 5443

Hello all.

Im trying to configure something to write to tape, but not quite sure how to. Here's what I have.

We have an application that runs its own backups, and is maintained by a third-party vendor.

So, I set up a CIF share on my DataDomain, and gave their application access to send its database backups to that CIF share. That CIF share has MTree replication set up on DataDomain, to copy that data over to a secondary DataDomain, but thats not part of my question...that just to give you details about this data.

What I need to do is, once per week, and then once per month, to send a copy if the contents of that CIF share off to tape, for offsite storage. Currently, this is being accomplished through Symantec's Netbackup, which does allow me to simply point that CIF share to a tape pool, and write that data off to tape. Of course, it has to go through a Netbackup media server (equivalent to a Networker Storage Node) to do that, but it does not have to write to DataDomain again, and then copy off to tape. This is what I want to accomplish with Networker.

In short, can I set Networker to back up directly to tape, or will Networker ONLY use tape as a cloning destination from a disk? I dont want to first create a backup of the data on the DataDomain, which is already on the datadomain CIF share, and then clone to tape.

Thank you!

Todd

Backups & clones can go to any appropriate pool and their defined backup devices/associated media. Disks or tapes or ... it does not matter as long as it is a supported device type.

Hi Toddman214

If i understand right the backup target for your 3rd party application is the CIFS on DD. How would you accomplish this if you are to bypass the DD. NetWorker can backup data from a network share or on a local filesystem to tape or disk. The backups targets are selected by pools and a pool can contain a tape device or a disk device, doesn't really matter.

You can do both.

I did get it figured out. It wasnt something I had tried before with Networker, so I was making rookie mistakes, and pointing to a tape pool that was set for "cloning" rater than "backup". I guess bingo got me looking in the right direction, so I'll credit him with the save, but thanks to you other guys as well.

I'm been trying to figure out how todo this too. If I understand correctly you have DataDomain providing a CIFS share that you backup directly to tape once a month? I need to be able todo this with NetWorker but how do you select that CIFS share as a client in NetWorker?
