XPS 15 9530: upgrade 512GB SSD to 1TB SSD (90wh battery)
I'm a little confused about the exact SSD I need to install. m.SATA? m.2? 850 EVO? 950 PRO? If 950 PRO, OK to go to 2TB? Please note I have the larger battery, no existing HDD.
Second, can I image my existing SSD onto the new SSD? Do I need to get an external case to use in "cloning"?
Thank you for any comments or pointers.

If you have the larger battery, you cannot use the 2.5" SSD - it won't fit.
The system uses an mSATA (NOT M.2, which is the newer format used by the successor model 9550) card format drive.

I think you'll find 1T is as large as mSATA drives are available - everything larger is M.2, which won't work.
If you want to do a direct clone, you'll need an external USB adapter that takes an mSATA drive. The other way is to make an image of the existing drive to an external hard drive and then restore the image to the new drive.

Thank you for your message.
This system has been tested with a max of 1 TB memory.
You can upgrade to a 1 TB 2.5" m.SATA 7.0 mm SSD.
There is multiple image cloning software available through which you can clone the drive. However, we recommend you to back up data to be on the safer side.

ejn,
Thanks for chiming in. I was pretty sure SATA was the wrong answer (it appears that is a stock Dell response, even when it's clearly identified that the bigger battery is in play).
I wasn't sure of the mSATA vs. M.2 (saw videos of the replacement process, but some weren't clear if showing the 9530 or 9560 (and I think they are different - it seems maybe the 9560 uses M.2).
I'll buy the external case along with the new drive in order to clone.
Thanks again,

The XPS 15 9530 uses mSATA, whereas the 9550 and 9560 use M.2. They are not interchangeable, although it does add to the confusion that M.2 slots can be wired to support the SATA protocol or SATA+NVMe (PCIe) protocol.... Technically mSATA and M.2 are designations of the physical slot type, whereas SATA and NVMe are a data protocol.
