dell inspiron 5759 wifi weak signal

I recently purchased a second hand Dell  5759, the computer looks new and works great unless I get more than a few feet from the router. I have gone to Dells website, updated the drivers, and all updates available. Love the computer but I cant use the wifi if I move from the room with the router to one just down the hall. I have other laptops all of which connect all over my house and all of which are showing my neighbors available networks but the dell just shows my network and will only connect if I am right by the router. Please help!!

Thanks, Billy

If you're comfortable opening the laptop up (instructions for which can be found in the Service Manual for that system, available at support.dell.com), you could try disconnecting and reconnecting the antennas from the WiFi card.  You may find that one or both of them are currently loose.

qitarguy, have you been watching the signal strength on the system?  If it is dropping off to one or two bars then the signal strength may be involved.

Can you use the 5.0 GHz and 2.4 GHz radios?  Have you tried disabling the Bluetooth for testing?

jphughan's suggestion might be relevant because the system is second hand.  Maybe it was sold for that very reason.

You might also check the Device Manager or type ncpa.cpl in a run box to see what card you have.  While there, check the status of the adapter and make sure the network is running as Private, if that is what your network should be.

Thanks, not opposed to trying this but have seen several other users having this issue and that never seems to be the issue. I was hoping since I am not the only one to have this problem there was some kind of fix.

The signal is strong throughout the house except on the Dell.  Blue tooth disabled, no change.  It is an Intel(r) Daul band wireless AC 3160. Network adapter says working properly.

How do I use  the 5.o and 2.4ghz radios?

Going to pull it down and check the antena wires now.

Thanks to both of you, it was indeed a loose antenna  on the wireless card. Everything is working fine now!
