XPS 8910 Power Light - is is supposed to indicate status?

I'm wondering if the power light (the one on the power switch, not the green light in the back) is supposed to indicate the status of the computer. Other computer models, both desktop and laptop, usually have some indication of the state of the computer (eg sleep/standby) by either changing the color of the light, or make it flash intermittently, etc. This helps distinguish if the computer is on or on standby when the monitor goes into power saving mode. 

However my XPS power light doesn't change, it's just that solid white color regardless of it's power status (except for being off, of course). I know that a solid orange light seems to indicate something wrong with the computer, but is there not any sort of visutal indicator that the computer is on standby/sleep?

The XPS 8910 does not utilize the power button to show any operating system modes. It is only used for pre-windows diagnostics. And it only uses number of flashes, no color codes. See page 114 in the XPS 8910 Service Manual.

Chris - I have a similar question concerning the Dimension 8400 series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor 550 (3.4Hhz)  purchased directly from Dell 2005.  Firstly:  The computer always performed until now; it will not boot.  The power button blinks amber.  Dell manual suggest to check Processor Power Cable attached to system board, also it suggest system may be experiencing a Pre Bios faliure.  The LED lights at the rear indicate the computer is off when the power button blinks amber.  The Dell Monitor does not boot up, however the monitor power light did flash once.  I will appreciate any ideas and suggestions on this problem.

Blinking Amber power button on DIMENSION 8400 is bad power supply and likely BAD CAPACITORS on the motherboard and in the power supply.   These systems are not worth upgrading or repairing due to the fact that you can get an Optiplex GX620 Tower or better for $99 or less. My friends bristle at me calling these free computers but the fact is that windows 7 alone costs that much.  The other reason I draw a line in the sand at this unit is that it works from MSDOS all the way to windows 10.

SpeedStep may be right that the PSU died but this worked for my D8400, the one time it did exactly what yours is doing, and mine has been working ever since (knock wood!):

1.Power off and unplug power cord from rear of PC

2.Press/hold power button for ~30 sec

3.Reconnect power cord and see if it boots now

And if you're using a power strip, surge protector, or UPS, disconnect those and try connecting the PC directly to the wall outlet.
