Processor Change i3 to i5 or i7 possible (xps L501x)

His I have a Dell XPS L501X i3 3.1 6gb ram

Just wondered if it's possible to change the processor to at least an i5?

If you require anymore information please let me know and I shall see what I can do.

Any help would be much appreciated

No - there's no way that CPU (which draws 55W) will run smoothly  in that system.  You need to stick to a 45W or lower draw CPU.

Even the i7-740QM will make the system run appreciably hotter AND cut battery runtime significantly from the i3 you have now (you're installing a 45W CPU in place of a 35W  unit), but at least the system's designed to handle 45W CPUs (as long as you realize you'll need an upgraded power supply).  There's no way that system is going to hand the 55W Extreme CPU - it's just not designed to cope with the heat produced.

These will take only first-generation Core CPUs (three digit model numbers).  If your system has Intel video, you can use only dual-core i7 CPUs (the first generation quad cores have no GPU onboard).

There are i5 and i7 CPUs in this series that will work, but you'll need to look at the used market - these haven't been made in years.

Look in the device manager under display adapters -- if you see Intel alone (no nVidia or AMD), you need a dual-core i7 first generation (or i5).  If you DO have an nVidia display adapter, you can use a first-generation i7 quad core mobile CPU (though you'll also need a new AC adapter if your current one is not 130W or higher).

Ejn63 is correct. I have the i7-740Q with the Nvidia 435M and the huge battery and it overheats all the time. I heard it's possible to get the i7-840  could work, not sure if it disables sli and cuda like the first gen i7 does.
