Optiplex 390 Windows 7 Install Issue

I've been fighting a Windows 7 SP 1 install issue with 3 Optiplex 390 PC's for the last few days. I've searched online for solutions and tried almost all of them without success. I've posted on the Microsoft 2007 forum and tried everything suggested, again with no success.

On all 3 PC's, I've formatted the HD and reloaded Windows 7 SP1. The reloads finished normally with no errors. I then ran Windows Update which listed over 180 updates that needed to be applied. The updates were downloaded and installed without issue. Running Windows Update again, it listed 7 more updates that needed to be installed. On all 3 of the PC's, these 7 updates fail to install with the error code 80072EFE.

The updates that will not install are two .NET framework updates, a security update, two general updates, the malicious software removal tool, and a definition update for defender.

I've done this same process with other Dell models in recent days without any problems. It's seems to be something with the 390's. I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers, which had no affect.

Any suggestions?

Do you have the latest version of the Windows Update Agent for Win 7?

You may have to download and install the latest "stand-alone" version of the Update Agent package manually from the link here:

support.microsoft.com/.../how-to-update-the-windows-update-agent-to-the-latest-version

Manually install that package, assuming you don't already have it, reboot, and try installing those failed updates again...

BTW: Make sure you download/install the correct version for Win 7, depending on whether you have 32- or 64-bit Win 7. :emotion-5:

Have you tried downloading the updates from Microsoft Catalog separately and installing them?

I'm a Windows 10 Beta tester and evaluator. For this I use two 390s. i3-2100 version. No problems whatsoever. These two 390s are working better than they ever were on W7, W8, W8.1. They were both  used for testing and evaluation on those OSs also. Anyway. Have you checked the catalog to see if those updates apply to your system? If they don't they don't matter. If they do, are they worth the effort?

I have a 390 desktop, and it works well with Windows 10, when onboard video is used.

I did update the Windows Update Agent. It still would not install the 7 updates.

Run the Win 7 Update Troubleshooter:

At your suggestion, I did download 6 of the 7 updates (I was unable to find KB915597 in the catalog). All 6 appeared to install successfully. I then reran Windows Update. It displayed 4 updates waiting to install. The 2 .NET updates and the malicious software update were not displayed. However, 3 of the 4 displayed were updates that I had downloaded and installed manually.I tried again to install them, and all 4 failed.

I downloaded and ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter. It ran for some time and reported 2 items that were not fixed:

Service registration is missing or corrupt

Windows Update Error 0x80070057

I searched online for both errors, tried a number of the suggested fixes. None of them made any difference, troubleshooter still reports the same errors and Windows Update still fails on the same updates.

There are so many different "fixes" for those errors... :emotion-6:

Here's what fixed them the last time I had the same problem with Win 7. The site says Win 10, but it worked for me with Win 7: https://www.xtremerain.com/service-registration-is-missing-or-corrupt/

Method 1 with Win 7:

  1. Click start>run
  2. Type in: services.msc
  3. Press Enter
  4. Follow the instructions on that web page to make sure Win Update is set to automatic and BITS and Crypto Service are both also set to automatic and both are started. Don't change any other settings in services.msc.
  5. Reboot and test Windows Update again

If Method 1 doesn't help, follow Method 2. I suspect you'll have to use method 2, but do #1 first because you'll need those services set to automatic and actually running to use WU.

in case not working try  to install  the updates separately and tell  me  which  one is stuck ? basacally the first error  you mentioned "80072EFE" is  a connexion issue if you  are connected through wireless / 3G try  on wired  one .

Hi Hammadi,

At your suggestion I downloaded all the updates (except KB915597 which I was unable to find) and installed them manually. I rebooted and ran Windows Update. It only reported one important update and that was KB915597 again which continues to fail.

Hi Ron,

I did steps 1 and 2 and reran the troubleshooter. Troubleshooter displayed that all problems were fixed. I then ran Windows Update again, The same updates failed to install.
