Horizontal lines

Hey all!

I just got an Alienware 17 R4 and I'm not sure if there's an issue with the monitor, I'm crazy, or a combination of both.  I did search for my issue on the forums, but didn't see anything specifically like what I'm experiencing.

It has 2560 x 1440 resolution, gsync ready (if that makes a difference), and I think that there are very prominent horizontal lines.  Images and videos just seem to have small (but noticeable) horizontal lines, almost like ridges.  It's as if, for any given image, if it had depth and you ran your fingers down it, you would feel ridges.  Crazy, I know, but it's very noticeable.

This is my first 2560 monitor, though, so I wanted to see if that's a normal side effect and I'm not used to the awesomeness, or if there's something wrong with this particular unit.

Below is a screen grab of what I'm talking about.  Does it seem, for lack of a better word, ridge-y to anyone else?

I've run the video tests and everything looks great, plus on hi-res pictures, there's none to speak of.  Games, as well, have very little of it.

Then I doubt there is a problem. Your settings also sound fine.

I think what might be happening ... the display is now so clear and highly detailed ... you can now notice imperfections in highly compressed images (that maybe you could not notice before).

There is no display technology that magically fixes poor graphics.

Is the panel running at it's Native (should say "Recommended") resolution in Windows-10 Settings?

Try some real pics (not in browser, not crunched into Silverlight or Flash or whatever that screen-shot is. There is also a ClearType adjustment, but I think that is just for rendered text. I suppose there are also color settings that might be set too low to dither properly?

If still problems, post a full 1440p high-res pic, I guess hosted on an image hosting service.

Thanks for the reply, Tesla!

It's almost certainly this "dithering" you speak of, after doing some research.  I've run the video tests and everything looks great, plus on hi-res pictures, there's none to speak of.  Games, as well, have very little of it.

That low pic was just a screengrab, sorry for the quality.  Everything is set to native or recommended, my drivers are good.  You mention color settings to make it dither properly: what should they be set on ensure a proper dither (that sounds so wrong).  I've seen the color adjustment option on the Nvidia Control Panel, but don't have the never to really adjust anything.  For refresh rate, I've only got 120 or 60, desktop color depth is 32 bit, and Output Color Depth is 8 pc.

Thanks again!

That's good news.  It's not surprising that it's my brain that's the issue, honestly.

Phew.  And thanks so much for your input!  Greatly appreciated!
