1080p on UHD AW 15 R3 2017
I'm seeing conflicting information on playing 1080p on the built in UHD laptop monitor. Some say it looks great. Others say it looks blurry or ghosting or pixelated. I'm trying to decide what resolution to get for a AW 15 R3 (2017). I'd like to game at UHD when the graphics card can handle it and drop to 1080p when it can't. Is this a reasonable expectation? Or am I just ignorant about the reality?

You can try it your way, but usually ... any time you run a display at it's non-native resolution, the image suffers.
I think Full-HD 1080p is fine for a small 15 inch screen. Think of the PPI or DPI.
If you get a machine with UHD/QHD but then you find yourself:
- Scaling-up Windows desktop and apps because text and icons are too small to read comfortably.
- Running your games at lower, non-native res because machine is just a laptop and can't handle it (game settings like High & Ultra or provide acceptable FPS).
... what are you gaining? What are you accomplishing?

Hi,
If you adjust the image to 1080p using the scaling options in the Nvidia Control Panel, some applications/games may not look as clear as expected. We recommend that you go for the QHD option, you can adjust it to 1080p and still have a great looking image or just stick to the QHD resolution (2560 x 1440).

I thought the QHD was only available for the 13" and the 15" was a choice of FHD IPS, FHD TN, and UHD IPS.

Thanks, I find this helpful. Coming from a 13" rMBP, Bootcamp could only run games at the lowest settings, and I had a desire for better details. Your comment showed me that resolution ≠ quality

Good example. Probably one of the highest quality (and high PPI/DPI) screens in a laptop. Like iPhone quality only bigger. But mated with Intel IGP or Intel-Iris. Really nice machine but not built for gaming. Actually, since I only game on my desktops I've been thinking of buying a 13" MBPr ... a 2013-2015 (with real ports) at the right price would work nicely too.

Mine's a Late 2013, and aside from gaming limitations, it simply works beautifully with excellent PPI (what I was hoping for with a UHD on the PC side). It even survived a coffee spill with only the loss of battery. Unfortunately, with Bootcamp gaming, I was limited to 800x600 stretched across the screen and the lowest settings with MMOs

I guess, with the news of Max-Q, it's possible that next year the GTX 1080 may be an option. So I guess next year I may be asking this again :-)
