Ubuntu 12.10 can't boot UEFI on Inspiron One 2330

I just bought a new Inspiron One 2330 with the intent to load Quantal Quetzal on it, dual-booting with Dell's Windows 8 installation.  I didn't foresee a problem, since I already knew it handled EFI fine, and had read that 12.10 even had an MS-signed preloader to allow systems locked to Secure Boot.

The install DVD brought up GRUB fine, but upon choosing any of the options, it would enter a blank screen with the same color as the menu background, and hang.   Same thing if I booted from a USB key.

Switching to Legacy Boot mode allowed the disc to boot just fine.  After giving it a test run, I went ahead and installed to the hard drive, after shrinking the Windows partition to make room.  I installed GRUB to the Linux root partition.  I then used Boot-Repair to help me convert it to an EFI install.  After manually copying the EFI loader file to the right appropriate directory/name on the EFI partition, I put the computer back in UEFI Boot mode, and...guess what?  Same thing!  Grub works fine, and I can still run Windows from it, but any option that tries to load Linux immediately freezes.

Suggestions?  What is it about this machine that makes it difficult to get along with?
