Dell G15 5530 - Ubuntu 22.04 LTS random crash
I write my story with G15 5530.
I have installed Ubuntu 24.04 for testing, but the laptop is randomly freezing. I was not able to identify the issue, sometimes crashed when plugged the charger, sometimes not waken up from suspend mode, sometimes freezed, when connecting a HDMI cable.
I have installed Ubuntu 22.04 LTS as a certified op.system and everything worked smoothly.
When Canonical released an upgrade in August, all symptoms came again, which I have realized with 24.04.
Finally found the reason: The upgrade included a new kernel with version 6.8.0-40. Checked back, and the Ubuntu 24.04 released with 6.8 kernel. After my Ubuntu 22.04 downgraded to 6.5 kernel, the system works again.
Conclusion the Canonical version of kernel 6.8 has a code which is incompatible with a Dell hardware and cause random freeze. I'm not able to find which code or hardware cause the issue.

Update: I *am* feeling lucky, so I carved out some disk space and installed Ubuntu 24.10 (kernel 6.11.0-9-generic) on a new partition then installed the Nvidia 560.35.03 open drivers as presented in "Additional Drivers" -- so far, the system is running stable for a good hour or two. Chrome, VLC, and a Unigine Superposition benchmark have performed correctly so far, wireless and Ethernet adapters are working, camera is working, haven't yet seen the cascade of freezing windows and system hangs associated with the 6.8 kernel.

Hi everyone,
Please be informed that Dell may not support the Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Operating System for all systems shipped with Ubuntu. To check compatibility, please visit Dell Support.
For more details, refer to the official Ubuntu certification page: https://ubuntu.com/certified.
Thank you for your understanding.

Same story here.... last Monday I updated my dell G15 - 5530 with ubuntu 22.04 to bios 6.8.0-40 and problems started. Today I tried to install ubuntu 24.04 but for my surprise the installation comes with 6.8.0-41 and occurs same problem... freezing all the time... Now I going to find to download old versions of ubuntu with kernel before 6.8 to make my laptop workfull.... please Dell do something

Hello, I'm having the same problem (with the same machine and the same operating system). I was checking the website kernel.org and saw that we are already on version 6.10.6; I wanted to know if this version stopped causing the freezing problems of Ubuntu 22.04 or if it is really necessary to downgrade to version 6.5 of the kernel.

@Lucas M. S. Hello,
There is not Canonical supported version of 6.10 kernel. The only choice to downgrade to 6.5 and always test when any kernel released by Canonical.
By the way my home workstation works very well with 6.8 kernel. The issue can be a Dell hardware modul and kernel incompatibility.
My next step is test Debian 12 with the Dell laptop.

@Pretorian2077 how did you downgrade the kernel version? or how to find a version of ubuntu 22.04 with a 6.5 kernel?

When the kernel upgrade was made, I have boot the laptop with pressing F6 and start with Advanced settings. Here I was able to select the 6.5 kernel.
Then added to /etc/default/grub the following line:
then from shell run update-grub command.
I have made this with grub-customizer application.

I hade the same issue, with the same model G15.
In my case, I didn't find the information about the new kernel update for a while., My ubuntu installation was working fine for a year and a half. I was playing Elden Ring, which is the most hardware demanding game I ever played, with another screen with the wiki opened on it, like a bowss.
Then, out of nowhere, it began to work badly, freezing randomly. I had to reboot my computer with the off button. At the same time, the wire of my charger was a bit damaged, so I thought maybe I did some hardware damage, like a short circuit or something.
So my investigation led me in hardware stuff, away from the kernells of it all. What I found is that when I unplug my battery from my motherboard and function only with the AC plugged in, it works fine with the 6.8 kernell, and the 6.5. No freezes
When I plug the battery back, it only works with kernell 6.5. With 6.8, it does the freezing again. (That's when I began having suspicions about a potential update to the kernells, and went looking for update dates to check if it correlates, and it does).
So I think that whatever they did with the new kernel, it messes with Dell battery/charging capacities. Also, my problem appears mostly when I try to ask "a lot of juice" out of my computer. Like starting a game, or opening a lot of stuff at the same time. So I think that the power usage of DELL messes with the new kernell somehow (or the other way around).
Also, I noticed that when people see the AC that goes with the Dell G15, they go "Woah!". Maybe they put something in the new kernell like "if it consumes that much power, it's not normal", an the Dell G15 being a power-hungry beast, it count as being "not normal" in battery behavior, and trigger the kernell to go BAM. As you can see, I'm not highly linux-litterate, and I'm mostly going off of intuitions, so do take this story with the grains of salt you think adequate.
I'm going to try and install another Linux. No way I'm going back to the malware that is windows for that. It will take much, much more.
Good luck with all of that, and have a happy day,
Ghy

I think I have the same issue, on a Latitude 5550 running Ubuntu 24.04.
I downgraded to kernel 6.8.0-31 yesterday and have gone from crashing every hour or two to having 6 hours of uptime. Not a great sample size, but wanted to share early in case it helps anyone else. I haven't had capacity to check if any of the other kernel versions between 31 and 40 have this problem, YMMV.
And see Pretorian2077's earlier answer for how to alter GRUB (or slowly spam escape when booting)
Hope this is helpful

Hello, how are you?
What exact kernel version did you use? I tried Linux 6.5.0-44-generic, but I end up having problems accessing the network settings, it's as if the drivers aren't loading.

Hi, my kernel version is 6.5.0-45. This is my last version before Canonical upgraded to 6.8. There were not any problem with my network drivers.

Thank you for your feedback.
The screen freezing seems to be related to the Nvidia driver. When I uninstall the driver, it works normally. Are you able to use your RTX4050 normally? I will try to use the kernel version you specified and understand the reason for the network driver.

What version of the nvidia driver are you using? I was able to configure the network interface in kernel 6.5.0-45, but when using the recommended nvidia 550 driver, I still get the same problem. This is very complicated.

I can confirm I have the same issue with G16 with RTX 4070
Solved by uninstalling the the latest kernel
sudo apt purge linux-image-6.8.0-40-generic linux-headers-6.8.0-40-generic
sudo apt autoremove
I then reinstalled the current kernel
sudo apt install --reinstall linux-image-6.5.0-45-generic linux-headers-6.5.0-45-generic
I also had to remove all of the nvidia drivers and reinstall them

I'm having the same problem with the G15 with Nvidia RTX 4060 and xubuntu 24.04 e 22.04 lts. The only way to make it works was to uninstall the Nvidia drivers, now I'm using the X.Org X server driver and everythig works fine.
