14.04 Official Dell Image for Inspiron 15 3542
Hi
I wish to upgrade my Inspiron 15 3542's ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04. So I was wondering if there's any official Dell 14.04 image available for us to use or I'd have to go the normal upgrade way?
Sorry if its already asked as I googled but couldnt find any...

Hi,
Thank you for reaching us.
Sorry to inform we do not have a factory image that can be shipped or downloaded separately.
You may upgrade it the normal way, however users are strongly encouraged to create the Dell Recovery Media.
The Dell Recovery Media is the best way for the user to have a backup of the Dell factory customized Ubuntu installation with all Dell drivers, support scripts, Dell diagnostics and Recovery Media creation tools.
The above mentioned step is advised only if the user wishes to go back to the factory state if he/she needs to wipe the OS , Not mandatory to create one.
Thank you

Hi,
Yes the Linux images are available for download, however it is the same version loaded from the factory(Some XPS models are shipped with 14.04 from Dell).
It is not the upgraded copy from 12.04 LTS, Hence I am not sure if there are any chances to release a upgraded Ubuntu version with factory image partition.
Thank you

Well, the recovery media was the first thing I did. Pity that there's no official image of latest LTS release though it is available for the XPS series if I remember correctly..
Any hopes of it in future?

I have the same notebook and it is just working perfectly with its pre-installed Ubuntu OS. I fear that, upgrading to 14.04 LTS - which is a must when the support for 12.04 LTS lasts on April 2017 - is going to ruin that user experience. You know, there is even no unworking led on this notebook - it is like a paradise, right?
I wish Dell would provide a customized Ubuntu 14.04 LTS media image for this model to expand its use/life time...

Cannonical Non-dell customised UBUNTU 18.04 Bionic LTS (stable)
Link with latest updates pre-installed:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/bionic/daily-live/
U will see a folder with today's date, open it (DONT OPEN YESTERDAY"S FOLDER)
Download file : bionic-desktop-amd64.iso
These are generic ISOs released by Canonical, and works pretty well on my system.
Dell customised Ubuntu images are not listed in their servers, hence u will be unable to dwnld ( even if u had ubuntu out of the box)
I am in contact with Advanced Resolution Team & they're on it!!
For now, satisfy ur thirst with the link I gave^
