Dell Latitude 7390 Battery Issue

Hi,

I have been experiencing a battery issue with my Dell Latitude 7390 laptop for over two years. Here are the details:

  • The battery does not charge at all.
  • The battery level indicator is missing from the top-right corner of the desktop/screen.
  • The laptop only powers on when the AC adapter is plugged in.
  • While the laptop is on, a light on the side flashes in the following sequence: one white flash followed by four orange flashes.
  • When I check the battery information in the BIOS, I see the following message:

Can someone help me understand what might be wrong with the battery?

  • Is the battery completely dead?
  • Should I replace it, or is there any way to fix this issue?

Please note:

  • The AC adapter I’m using is the original one that came with the laptop.
  • The laptop has never been opened or serviced by anyone, including a technician.

I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance on resolving this problem.

Thank you!

AC adapter unknown mean the battery will not charge.  Try another OEM Dell AC adapter first -- if it's recognized, the battery should charge.  If it is also unrecognized, the second possibility is a bad DC jack.  Replace that next.

One of those two should solve the problem.

Hi

I would consider a LIVE Linux, like linux Mint and run that for a few minutes to see if the battery is acknowledged (I assume you have run hardware tests already).

Is the power supply the original?

If in doubt please ask.

Hi @ann_droid

I am already running Fedora Linux on my machine and the battery is never acknowledged:

Would it be necessary to run a live Linux distribution on a flash disk?

And yes, the charger is original, I received it with the laptop.

This is not a software/OS issue -- it's hardware.

Hi @ejn63

A while ago my AC adapter has been overstretched and the wires have been exposed:

I wonder if this could be behind the problem.

I will try to obtain another OEM Dell AC adapter and see if this fixes the problem.

That could easily be the cause.  Replace with a new OEM Dell adapter.

I suggest the Dell 130W USB charger, but this older machine uses a barrel connector, 130W is available for that as well

an adapter for USB-C to Dell barrel is available too
